I'm looking at a 1990 power ram LE250 4X4.

I'd appreciate any wisdom you first generation wizards may be willing to dish out.

How do I identify axle ratio? (I only want it if it has 3. 54's)

How do I know if it has a Dana 60 or 61 in the front?

What rear axle do they come with?

Does it have an NP 205 transfer case?

Any things I should look out for when I go take a look at the truck?

Thanks for your time!

Peter

The automatics only use the 3. 07:1 ratio. The getrag uses the 3. 54

There is a sticker under the hood above the (single) battery. It will say the ratio and the axle. You already know the ratio if it's auto or manual. I have heard stories of them having anything from 60/61 and the 70/71 axles. I don't think anyone really knows. Use the VIN and call the dealer if you can't read the underhood sticker. I don't have a 4X4, otherwise I'd tell you what mine has.

I "think" the 70 rear is the 3. 54 and the 71 is the 3. 07

If it's an automatic you do NOT want the 3. 54 because that will limit your top speed to about 65mph. The 3. 07 will run about 75.

Peter,

My son's '90 D250 came with a Dana 70 and a 4. 10 (5 spd) and a locker. If the hood info tag is missing there is a metal tag attached to rear end at the cover bolts that will tell you what the ratio is unless it has been removed for service and not put back on. The last way is to raise the rear end with wheels off the ground and count the revolutions of the drive shaft with one revolution of the wheel to get the ratio...

I'm looking to build a wheeling rig.

I'm looking to build a wheeling rig, that is why I want to stay away from the Dana 61 & 71, because of their goofy ring and pinion setup. It is a manual transmission, I'll be sure to check the tag out when I go take a look at the pickup.

What kind of gas engines came in these things? The 90' I want to go look at is a snowbird special (68,000 miles), looks to be in awesome shape... but no Cummins. If it isn't fuel injected I think I'll stay away.

Gasser axles in 3/4+ were all Dana 44 front and Dana 60 rear. The only difference between the 60/61 and 70/71 series axles was the weight rating and the outboard bearing sizes, at least on the diesels.

EEK...

Anybody have a link to a VIN decoder so I could have a firm idea what is in and under the pickup before I go for a 60 mile drive to go take a look?

Thanks again,

Peter

If you talk real nice to the member on here who works for a delaer he will hook you up. I don't recall his user name at this time. He is here somewhere.

PM me/give me your vin and I will ask him. You want the axle numbers?

The fellow who has the pickup works the night shift, I'll call him up in a hour or two then PM the VIN tonight.

Thanks guys!
