411... Hello, information please #ad

Good day all you wise people who appreciated the Ram/Cummins combo before the rest of us #ad

Now while I feel quite comfortable under the hood of an ISB powered truck, I am behind when it comes to the B5. 9. So I am seeking greater wisdom from you BB members.

? What source would you recommend to supply the parts or a kit to add an intercooler to the non-intercooled 1st gen truck? What is the best procedure to accomplish this feat. What parts would be necessary? Intercooler, intake elbow, connector hoses, clamps.
I understand that Banks has something to offer but we are not interested in their kit since it comes with some stuff we don't want.

We are experimenting with a 12cm2 exhaust housing on a 1st gen truck. What have you all discovered with regard to exhaust housings. I understand the stock setup is 18. 5cm2 and I don't think going to a 16cm2 is enough separation to provide the boost appreciation one might want to create. Knowing my truck came with a 12cm2 I would think that would be the way to go on a stock engine. Opinions anyone? Answers? Home remedies? #ad

I can answer the housing question: going to the 12CM2 housing makes it REAL snappy, and tends to cut down the smoke. It's dang near impossible to get a 4 inch exhaust under it, so free up everything as best you can. The Wastgated housing has a different outlet - instead of being integral with the casting, the wastegated versions have a plate that bolts on the back. On the new ones, it has an elbow and a cone shaped outlet you're familiar with, but a plate with the same fitting as the original is available. This plate moves the exhaust back a wee bit (1. 5 inches?), and can cause interference. taking a chunk out of the pipe should help.

Oh, heh. Still you, eh? Ok. As best I can tell, finding a stock intercooler and putting it in isn't a bad deal. I've been told by someone who's done it that it's not that big a deal to do. You have to change turbo outlet (seems appropriate when you're changing the housing... do the turbo and intercooler together) and the inlet adapter on top of the intake.

Oh, and if you're after more power... CHANGE INJECTORS. That's where the power lies. Also, the timing (both pump and engine pin) need to be carefully set, and I reccommend a slight advance, from 1. 25 to 1. 35 or so travel at TDC.

One last thought... If the truck has 9MM injectors, the head is somewhat less durable, or so I'm told. If so, keep things coooooolll...

Hi HVAC.

I did the housing change twice. First from 18. 5 to 16. Boost went from 13 to 16 psi. Then went to the Banks "quick turbo" which I've been told is 14cm2. Boost went up to 18 psi. Turned up fuel at the pump and the wastegate actually started work. It was set at 19 psi not 21 psi like Banks said. With the wastegate disabled boost would go to 21-22 psi. Recently installed some injectors that POWER WAGON recommended and reset timing, turned fuel DOWN and now boost will go to 27 psi with wastegate disconnected, but I set it at 23 psi. The injector change is the way to go-hands down, no doubt, don't think twice about it. And it's cheaper than the other stuff too!

Banks will sell the intercooler by itself without the exhaust, filter, turbo ect. But it still isn't cheap or even reasonable for that matter ($800+). It's better than a stock first gen intercooler though.

Hi HVAC
I am currently running a Banks Power Pack with 14cm2 turbo and 3. 5" exhaust on my '93, BD Power Injectors and have tweaked the pump. I can generate 27lbs of boost unloaded but rarely do. I am also running a Horton fan. I am planning on removing the Banks muffler and installing either a Flow Master muffler or straight pipe so the Cummins can breath better and the egts. can come down. I expect to see slightly lower boost as well as lower egts once this is done. At this point I am happy with my trucks performance but will always be open to any "improvements"
Happy Trails

HVAC,
I know that jsimpson mentioned putting a 91 1/2- 93 intercooler on his 89. You might want to try to ask him what it took as far as parts and difficulties. I know that he had a question as to where the A/C condensor was supposed to go. I'm interested in what you find out as I will be doing this in the future.

Lt the way they are is condenser in front inner-cooler in the middle and the radiator closest to the engine.

I vow not to discriminate, I'll make em all run good (Dodges that is #ad

Go to www.dieselpage.com and check out the instalation instructions for the banks intercooler on the first gen trucks. Could give you a couple ideas. The inlet and outlet was level with the botom of the intercooler not centered like the stock intercooled trucks. While cruising the web I did find another company that sells a kit but it will take me a week to find it again.

Hey HVAC!

Any updates yet on the 12cm2 housing & intercooler installation on your friend's First Generation Cummins? I'm especially interested in your findings on performance with the 12cm2 & VE injector pump.
