Took my truck in for the 1st oil change at 2000 miles. Took longer than anticipated due to over torqued oil filter.

Finally get the keys back and notice scuffed up left front tire. That pissed me off, OK go home and prep tires no problem.

Go 4/10 of a mile from Dealer to fill the tank, left front tire now in different position and now notice large PUNCTURE wound on left front tire(Really pissed now).

Return to service dept to ***** about new wound (oh sorry) may take 3 days to locate new Michelin M&S tire Bulls**t I am NOT leaving without and new tire.

Dealer had to remove a new tire & wheelfrom a new Ram on the lot (oh by the way new Rams with Michelin M&S tire do NOT have raised white letter like mine).

BEWARE AND CHECK TRUCK WHEN PICKING UP AFTER SERVICE, IF I WENT HOME AND THEN NOTICED THE DAMAGE LATER I WOULD HAVE BEEN OUT $150. 00 TIRE.

Sorry for the Rant, I love my Ram.

BTW Dealer claims that tire damage most likely occured from the rack #ad

Heaterexpert, sorry to hear about your bad experience. How about emailing me with the name of that dealer! Was it in Auburn? hehe. I had my 92 in there 5 times, never figured anything out... my 99 will never see that place!

Good reason to avoid dealer service! Gotta ask your self if the frustration was worth it? I'd rather take the time and effort and do it myself. That way I don't worry if they screwed up when I'm 30 miles off the paved road and 100+ miles from nowhere. Good job on making them own up and give you a new tire... Takes quite a screw up to trash a LT Michelin, wonder how they did it?

Heaterexpert,

Over torqued oil filter. Sounds familiar. My first oil change was very challenging. I bent the oil filter wrench I just bought trying to remove the factory filter form my 2001 ETH. Wound up calling my mechanic buddy and he came over with his HD oil filter wrench and together with the OEM jack handle (pry bar) we were able to remove the factory oil filter. It was obvious that bubba form the factory forgot to dab a little oil on that filter gasket. Sorry #ad
for your bad experience with the dealer mechanic. I learned a long time ago that you almost have to interview the mechanic that’s going to work on your truck before you agree to the work.

Sorry to hear about the tire. The funny thing is... you go in for a $30 dollar oil change and now they have to eat a $150 dollar tire. 99% of the time a real mechanic doesn't do oil changes,it's left for some snot-nose minimum wager. I'm willing to bet he didn't prefill the oil filter either. That's why I do my own.

The reason for having the dealer do the oil changes is they offered a lifetime oil change for $269. 00 parts and labor. There is no good reason to past up that kind of offer. BTW I asked that the filter be primed and I was assured that it is always done.

Heaterexpert, what kind and grade of oil is this dealer putting into your engine? I think its probably whatever this dealership pushes. This way they can get their kick back from the oil distributer at the end of the year.

This TSB lists two DC part numbers for the "officially authorized" oil for Cummins Diesels in Dodge applications.
http://www.ecpe.vt.edu/~dfritz/technical/TSB00/09-02-00.html

Just for kicks, check your invoice to see what the heck they put in there. I would be surprised if it is rated CH-4 / SJ.

One thing is for sure, the next time the dealer sees you pull into the lot, your truck will receive the "Super TLC" treatment.

The Filter looks just like the stock filter Gray

Amen to the WAY overtorqued filter-I changed my oil and it took me a half hour to take the filter off-King Kong strikes again! My strap wrench was as stressed as I was by the time it came off-I was not impressed!

I've been told that the oil filters are installed by a robot, that's why they're so tight.
As for dealer service, I have the opposite experience... I have at least 3 good dealers with service departments to chose from, all within 20 miles, and all have proven highly competent.
I originally switched to Dodge because 2 different Ferd garages couldn't find and fix the 10 miles per gallon problem on my'90 Ranger, after a total of 32 visits to the service departments... 10 miles to the gallon from a 4 cylinder engine.
The local tire and oil change places are horrible, though, they have the most inexperienced, cross-threading,bolt-stripping,over-inflating, ex-burger flippers doing untold damage to people's vehicles.
I change my own oil, since it's Amsoil. As for the tire places, I have a typed, detailed one page list of specific things they must do when rotating my tires. I make them read it, and inform them that any deviation from the list that causes damage is unacceptable...

On the "tight" oil filters -
I saw in another thread that Fleetguard has tracked part of the problem to the material used in the gasket. We may have to quit cussing DC for this one. My second oil change was also difficult, though nothing like the first. That suggests a combination problem - both "too tight" and a material problem. The good news is we can look forward to IMPROVED material in the future once the present stock of filters is sold out.

Well, as I said in a previous post when so many were "upset" about how tight their oil filters were, mine was one pull on the filter wrench and off it came, this was at 2500 miles. Perhaps a little more time in the gym.

Heaterexpert: How many oil changes a year can you have done?

Don't the engines come from Cummins with the oil in and filter on? If so then it is Cummins that is the cause of the problem not DC.

I noticed when reading this thread that when installing the oil filter some are pre-filling the filter before install. Is this required or just a pre cautionary measure. I never thought about doing this but it looks like it makes it easier for the oil to circulate after putting in the new oil hence causing less wear and tear on the engine.....

According to the manual both '96 and the '01 ---- prefilling the oil filter is a MUST.

My experience is that it takes some time to fill up as the original "pour-in" will soak into the paper and you can "top-off" a couple times.

With the high volume & pressure oil pump on the 24V, if the filter isn't prefilled the initial blast of oil at startup is probably hard on the filtering media. Could possibly damage it? Just guessing. But at least it's a must-do (to pre-fill) for good engine health, especially on a diesel with such high compression and internal forces.
