This requires a method of returning excess fuel back to the tank - I installed a "Y" fitting to the tank vent pipe that runs next to the fuel fill tube - works fine.

Just an FYI, using the vent tube doesn't work so well on the 3rd gen trucks... check valve in the vent tube causes issues. I found this out when I hooked in my auxiliary tank.

;)

We have several trucks and had build an aluminum block that mounts on the frame rail... this block holds 2 filters. . the primary filter is a 10 micron with a water trap and drain and a secondary filter that is 2 micron...

Each of our trucks has a in-tank pump except for our CAT engines which use a gear pump on the engine... . we've not had any problems with this system except (1) small one on our 6. 7L 5500... where we forgot to change them and drove the truck close to 85K miles before we clogged it up and threw and error code... .

As it is... we change the filters as we move into the fall, and do the winter check, before the freeze starts... .

I built my own combination regulator/bypass valve from common ACE hardware parts:

Mine is adjusted to 15 PSI, and has held that PSI flawlessly for a couple of years now - here's a thread pointer giving general info on how these can be built:

Thanks Gary, that looks very easy to do.

Don't forget Stanadyne offers a nice 2-micron filter arrangement too. Very customizable.

Here's a synopsis of what I did with it. I'm running a Holley Blue pump, but I notice Stanadyne now offers a pump integral with the filter head.

2 micron filter

I live in Minnesota will your your truck start and run and drive below 32 or 0 or -30 with out a heater on the 2 micron filter . I would like to add a 2 micron filter to my truck if it will start and run and drive good in the cold and if water gets past the stock filter will the 2 micron filter stop the water.

My experience is that the stock pump will not adequately push fuel thru the stock filter and a 2mic filter. I also used the Stanadyne unit, but I went with the FM1000. (But Donaldson in the only maker of a 2 mic filter for it. ) I originally had Richard's Walbro pump, but now have a Raptor 150. I also moved the draw straw from the top of the tank to the canister of my wife's liberty to stop the 1/4 tank problem (truck canister is in the jeep now pumping fuel thru a Stanadyne FM100) .

I live here in Minnesota as well, I have had GDP for 1 1/2 years now. It worked just fine through the winter. I just have the stock in tank lift pump.

We run into Canada in the winter and just plug the truck in at night when it's below 15 or so... we've been down to -20 that I know of... . remember doing the math on the C* to F* conversion... we've not had any problems with either the Dodge's or the CAT's with our filter set up... .

And frankly I'd never thought about cold fuel sitting in the filter... I'm sure in the bottom of the 10 micron there is a small chunk of ice from the water trap holding the water. .

If the fuel is properly winterized its not an issue, if the fuel isn't properly winterized it doesn't matter what size the filter is. I got bad fuel last winter and my 20um filter was the one that gelled, fuel never made it to the 2um :)

What lead you to believe it wasn't enough? My in-tank pushes thru 3 filters, 20, 5, 2 absolute without issue, in fact I got 30K miles out of my last set of filters, and only changed from age not from psi drop.

Went there, saw it got a t-shirt. Thanks for letting me thump on the door and fender.
