Thanks ALL. Flush the lines with... Mineral spirits? Also, the TCase. I believe that you mean 9/16 NUTS? I looked at my parts fiche and my trans. There are studs that stick out of the forward facing part of the Transfer Case and there are 6 NUTS that attach it to the trans. I will keep you all posted. My new trans will be here tomorrow. Do you "prime the system" at all? Fill the TC? Sorry for all of the questions, just LOTS of little things. The actual R&R of the transmission is not too bad. Also, the TC cooler. What is it? I see it but it looks like a small resevoir for ATF? How does it cool the Torque Converter?? Any problems with running a "cleaner" through it? Can you run compressed air through an open end of the trans lines and get most ATF out this way? I would keep it to about 40 PSI?? Thanks again in advance.

raff, I have heard of an aerosol that you use to flush out the lines or I have taken a pump type oil can and used laquer thinner to flush and then blow out with plenty of compressed air. Main thing is to have everything CLEAN with no residue. When filling the trans, I usually fill about half of capacity when the convertor is empty. You don't want to overfill the case and blow oil out the vent. Also, better to underfill than to overfill when first getting it running. Put enough to indicate on stick when cold running and drive it ,heat up the trans and recheck it

Got my trans, will put it in WED. I will weigh it tomorrow for official numbers. AIN'T NO 100 lbs:--) I picked it up off the pallet. Bet it is 170+ and that is bone dry without the TC! Not sure what the stock TC weighs but I will also guess that an ATS Triple lock is all of or more than 50 lbs DRY. I think the trans with 3 gallons ATF and the TC might be around 250 lbs. Not bad IF you can get it in on the first try or two but that feels about 1000 lbs after three or so tries. Wonder why the guys who said they used to do it all of the time think that a 727 with OD weighs so little? Better Wheaties? Mine don't!

I put about a quart of ATF oil in the TC before installation.

The biggest problem I had with the transfer case was corrosion in one of the stud holes that connects to the transmission. It would not come apart without driving a thin chissel in between the two cases. Then everything went at once!

As far as cleaning the lines goes... as long as your old transmission wasn't full of crap, I would just blow the lines out. I don't think you need to flush them with anything. If you do, just use ATF.

I know the triple disc converters weigh more than 50 lbs on their own. I would say 75 - 90 lbs.

Good luck all.

As for flushing the lines; I would rent a flusher from an equipment rental that works by air pressure. These flushers use mineral spirts and a pulsing action to really clean the lines and coolers.

Have you done transmission installs before? One problem I see people do is not get the convertor in all the way. For Chrsyler's transmissions are easiest if the trans. is standing on the end and slid the convertor down. Make sure the pump gears are centered and the convertor should slid on by fairly easy. As you stab the transmission the convertor should be back half and inch from the flywheel. I have seen many busted pumps and bell housing when people tighten the bell housing bolts and the convertor did not seat all the way.

I will see if I can get a pulsing/cleaning unit. Mineral spirits from the hardware store?? Can someone PLEASE clarify EXACTLY what type of mineral spirits or am I making this too hard? ATS does the same thing with hot ATF. Then they pressure and flow test the lines and coolers. I do not have that luxury. I at least was going to run about a gallon of new ATF through the lines and cooler. I bought a cheapie fluid pump from Advance that I was going to use to pump the trans fluid into the cooloing lines with. Done enought trannies to know about properly aligning/engaging the TC to the pump. Got the old trans out today by myself with a floor jack. Took the tranfer case off first. Too much bulk/weight as one unit without full lift and quality trans jack. I did have to swap my speed sensor with my trans as the pallet straps were cut by a careless fork lift driver. I noted that there was a LOT of metal shavings on the magnetic speed sensor which tells me for sure that I was not only slipping the TC but OD clutches as well. Putting the new ATS system in tomorrow. Will be out of town for 5 days after that. Probably will not finish till next week since one man project. Nice side note. My dad left me his 2002 CTD truck with 3K miles on it this week since he is traveling. Sure miss my DDTT and 275's/soon to be DDII's. BTW, I now have a permanent home for the PDF's / parts Efiche for 2000 std and quad cab trucks, ALL models including gas. Send me an email. . -- email address removed --

Just regular mineral spirts from the hardware store is fine. I have been doing R&R for 10+ years and done thousands of transmissions, so this isn't coming from shade tree mechanic; not that there is any thing wrong with that;)

lgibson,

Us shade trees get on the Web to ask you guys how to do it!What might one call this pump to a desk clerk at the local rental shop? I may have to settle for mineral spirits and the old air compressor. Not too worried about much junk in the system coolin lines. OEM trans was running about 92% OK still when I ordered new system. Caught it as it died. Not much metal in the pan, OD unit or torque converter.

UPDATE! I have about 1000 miles on the new transmission now. . Next time I WILL get a trans jack BUT it certainly can be done with a floor jack and a gullible friend:) Cleaned the cooling lines with mineral spirits and a cheap fluid pump from Advance. Then I primed them with new 7176 ATF. Had to buy a frame spreader ($100) because I could not rent one. It is necessary to get the cross-member back in. It is about 4 inches too wide when you go to put it back in! Would not do it with the transfer case on unless you have trans jack or can bench 400+ LBS! Sure can tell it's not slipping! Took me a few more weeks to get around to installing the commander. Now I can play with the TC lockup speed. It will knock the rear wheels loose in the rain if you are not careful. Getting ALL of the power to the ground is is an amazing difference. Makes the truck faster. Can't wait to tow with the new ATS setup.

Also, I now have 2000, 2001 & 2002 . PDF files from DC parts dept for std and quad rams if anyone is interested, send me an email to the address above:D
