transmission failed at 10,400 miles. I pull a 27 foot 5th wheel. Only going 20mph at failure. Locked up and slid truck wheel 15 feet. Replace (new) had bad 2nd gear. Diamler wanted to repair, I insisted they put in another new one. This truck is now on number 3. Am I the only one having 6 speed manual transmission problems? anyone with information plese e-mail rotten. ralph@juno.com

That is sad to hear and I hope you get your truck running soon. I have not really heard of too many people having problems with there 6-speeds other than some say they get gear clash in 3rd gear. I have 27,700 miles on my 6-speed with no problems at all and very happy with it.

Creep'n up on 8,000 miles. Only gripe is that it is loud in 5th. If I get below 1500 RPM's in 5th (empty) I will start to hear what sounds like gear roll over. If I ease onto the throttle the load seems to kill the noise right away... almost like a "lash" issue w/ ring and pinion. Oh yeah, I WISH MINE CAME WITH A McCLEOD Clutch... but then again, a crew cab and a clipped HX40 would also have been NICE... while I'm whining.

Max

Ps. Sorry to hear about your trubz, I hope rig, and crew escaped unscathed.

27,500+ Miles on mine and still running like new. No noise and or vibration. Great for towing.

Max,

Not sure on the noise you are describing, but I think mine does this in all gears if I let the R's drop below about 1300, even coasting with no load, down shifting gets rid of noise, until the next gear drops in R's.

I assumed this was normal, and yes, it does sound like a ring and pinion noise.

I have an '01 ETH. When cold (first 2-5 miles) I get grinding while shifting into 4th. No other problems. I first thought it was the #$%@ hydraulic clutch, but it doesn't do it in any other gear. I took it to the dealer. . said the gears needed to "seat" I said grinding won't help them seat if there is nothing left to seat!! #ad

Shane I had the same problem with mine but it had to be cold outside to effect 4th. dealer put new transmission in no questions asked. This transmission feels perfect. I have drove every 6pd that has come to the dealer and this new transmission feels as good as the best I've drove. Pete

I got 34K on my ETH I bought in April, and the transmission is great. Shift ultra-smooth, much better than the ZF in the Fords. I always double clutch when I downshift, trans seems to like it better. #ad

I had a new 6sp put in at 27K miles after I complained about the old one. It had a "rattle" when clutch was released in 1st or 2nd at idle throttle. Also made same shuttering noise if braking while idling at low speed in 2nd, sort of creating a load situation. Dealer agreed it was not normal so they replaced clutch and release bearing. Noise still there so they put in a new transmission. Noise went away. Now, after 5k more miles, I almost think I hear the noise returning. Anyone else have this noise? If so, what could it be?

Thanks,
David

My 6 speed has a slight intermitent 3rd gear clash that has improved with milage. 2 of the 3 dealers i polled new of the issue and said the DC star line was recomending adding a bottle of Knob Ceek whiskey, I mean the LSD snake oil and that it would take a couple of weeks to work in. When I get back from Indy and Daytona next month I will have them do it to mine. Other than that I love the thing. One of the members stated that if you move the shifter to the rightt and then back and into 3rd it won't grind. He was correct that always works, he said he drove a bus or fleet vehical and they all did it unless he and the other drivers followed that method, sounded goofy but it works. Do a search and you can get the info from his response.

I was beginning to think I'm crazy - I have the same grind/nothcy shifting in all gears in the morning after a 35F or lower night. A few miles seems to make it go away but I'm thinking it may be time for a trip to the the dealer. The truck has ~22k.

I bought my 6-spd used with 10K miles on it. It just went over 25K miles and operates flawlessly. I pull a 15K lb 5th wheel trailer with it. Works great.

Hope y'all get your problems fixed.

I have just over 6000 on my truck and all is well. It was very "tight" when new. We went to Mich for Christmas and the Temp didn't go above 20 and I didn't have any trouble. By the way I am getting almost 18 MPG now, that is with the 4:10s and 285 BFGs.
Good Luck.

Shelby -

I share your opinion about the noise and it being normal.

Hdg -

Your Noise, when "they" did you clutch, did "they" check your transmission's input shaft for excessive runout/play? Could be the input shaft, the bearing it rides on, even something like a less than square bellhousing.

Just some Idear's

I made a trip to the dealer yesterday. Got the answer I expected. "Cant duplicate the problem"I told them to call the DC tech line and ask about 3rd gear clash. Nothing doing. I guess they dont want my business. I know they dont want my business!Theirs another dealer about 20 miles away. I suppose I could give them a try otherwise its about 100miles to a dealership in Portland which Ive dealt with in the past.

So far from what we have heard here, the 6spd failures seem to be very low.

Ralph,I have the same truck as you,2000 4x4 QC ETC/6spd,and I'm now at 36,000 miles with no problems at all. I had the common 3rd gear clash for the first 6k miles, but the rest is smooth sailing. I also have alot more power going through my trans along with the frequent burnout.

Yes, I saw the topic but posted anyway. My 99 5 speed chatters a bit in 1st and 2nd gear until I put it under load. I think that I'm not getting into the throttle enough at times, because the chatter isn't there probably 98% of the time.

My new 3500 (800 miles) just started grinding when shifting from 6th to 5th. Must be something wrong with the syncronizer. The owner's manual says it take a special oil. I made sure it was full. Real light weight oil. Haven't taken it to the dealer yet, will wait until it gets worse. If I drive like an non-syncronized transmission (double clutch and rev it up)it goes right in.
