In about '97 or '98 I went to the Scheid Diesel show in Bloomington, IL. A guy from Gateway Cummins(St. Louis I think) had a 90's Chevy 4x4 3500 auto that he had put a Cummins into, and used the stock chevy auto(turbo 400 I think). He had done the work himself, and done a beautiful job. Had to move the radiator support foreward,
and grind a casting tab from the front differential. I think he bought the transmission adapter plate from a junkyard that has a fleet of old chevy breadtrucks that had all been converted to cummins power. He made his own motor mount brackets, and might have had to revise the transmission x-member mount(can't remember). Anyway, he made it work with the IFS, and it looked like it had come from the factory that way.
His comment was "hope the transmission lives behind the Cummins"... he had put in the 185hp recon motor.
I have been tempted to do something like this, except with a motorhome running
a gas 454/TH400. Would be a sweet upgrade if the transmission would stand up.
Hope this helps.
