Anyone to help finish a conversion in Niagara Falls area?

I opened my mouth when someone asked about my Dodge and now I have this 2000 GMC 3500 crew cab dually 4wd automatic. I like this truck but man I miss the Cummins! Is it possible to swap one in with the IFS 4wd? I have another 1999 Dodge 3500 2wd automatic that is wrecked. I hear the 4L80E is a good trans for the 5. 9. ??? Also the GMC is 4. 10 geared, too low?? Anybody done this one? Thanks stacerbob

my post might help you with some info... look down at cmooney Questions about converting a 1989 v3500 crew.....

there are links in there

IFS is definately harder then the straight axle as there is alot of suspension stuff there... you will have to have better gear ratios. . 4. 10 will have it screaming... even with an Overdrive it still will wind...

please let me know what you find out and Ill include it in my how-to conversion post here and at CK5

thanks

obviously a duramax will work... but it isnt quite the cummins is it :)

I have done that swap in my '96. I converted from the 4L-80E to a NV-4500. I also left the stock front IFS suspension. If you have any questions let me know. I will try to answer them for you.

In about '97 or '98 I went to the Scheid Diesel show in Bloomington, IL. A guy from Gateway Cummins(St. Louis I think) had a 90's Chevy 4x4 3500 auto that he had put a Cummins into, and used the stock chevy auto(turbo 400 I think). He had done the work himself, and done a beautiful job. Had to move the radiator support foreward,

and grind a casting tab from the front differential. I think he bought the transmission adapter plate from a junkyard that has a fleet of old chevy breadtrucks that had all been converted to cummins power. He made his own motor mount brackets, and might have had to revise the transmission x-member mount(can't remember). Anyway, he made it work with the IFS, and it looked like it had come from the factory that way.

His comment was "hope the transmission lives behind the Cummins"... he had put in the 185hp recon motor.

I have been tempted to do something like this, except with a motorhome running

a gas 454/TH400. Would be a sweet upgrade if the transmission would stand up.

Hope this helps.

I have heard that the 4L80E is capable of handling the power. I know the gear ratios would not be the best. I really like the way this truck rides and drives (and the room) but man is it a slug! If any body has pics of one please let me know where they are. Thanks
