I looked at a bunch of 2001. 5's the past couple of days. Some of the other things I noticed... .
-The rear seat(QCab) has three belt loops and hooks at the top of the seat back. For kid seats I presume? Don't know for sure.
-The travel convenience package no longer has lighted vanity mirrors.
-4wheel ABS is standard with the new 4wheel disc brake system,and a bigger m/cylinder.
-The intercooler hose clamps going from the turbo to the CAC are now spring clamps.
-No mouldings on the bed at all. Now that's kind of a dumb idea,because I had a habit of accidentally kicking my '96 ST tailgate every time I climbed into the bed.

I saw both the Bright Silver and Amber Fire. I like both the colors.

I agree on the lack of tailgate trim. I tend to kick mine sometimes getting into the bed. Not good if you have steel-toed boots and no tailgate trim! #ad

Does anyone know how much it would cost to put a trim piece on the tailgate? I assume that the pannels are the same, and you could just use the trim piece from an earlier model. I have always thought that it looked pretty sharp with that big black band on the back.

I'm pretty sure that the black trim for the tailgate and the bed side body moldings can be added from a 99 model truck. I plan on adding the body moldings but I'm starting to get used to the missing tailgate trim. I guess DC had to find a way to pay for the 4 wheel disc and the "VOID" stickers by eliminating some of the trim.

Addional 2001. 5 observations:

Yea, there are three loops above the rear backseat. These are for child restraint seats although I don't know how you are supposed to use them. They kind of get in the way of the sliding rear window. If I figure out how to tilt the seat back forward to get access to their anchor points I may just remove them.

Don't miss the plastic tailgate trim myself. Looks better without the plastic in my opinion, but may change my mind if I happen to scratch that area.

With the manual transmission the cruise control now controls speed directly through the engine's ECM. There is no actuator/linkage setup (still there on the autos, I think for downshift actuation). The new cruise control (with maunal transmission) is the most acurate I have ever seen in any vehicle. I can set it at 70 MPH and go up hills, down hills, whatever and the speedo needle looks like its painted in position on the dial. No surge, no over/under speeding, no droop going up hills, it stays where you set it. Very nice.
