Every time I really hit my brakes and I'm going around 30-35 mph, I feel a pound through my brake pedal and it feels as though my power assist drops right out and i have a hard time stopping. This has been happening since it was new and I just thought it was part of the normal braking system. Does anyone else have this problem?

I once in a while get that same feeling, also like the ABS is trying to work overtime but it does not come to a stop quick at all, only happened I think maybe 5 times in 16,500 miles.

Kevin,
I am having a problem at low rpm with my brakes and power steering. I understand that the pressure for the brakes now comes from the power steering pump. The problem seems to be not enough pressure coming from the power steering pump. I suspect that the pump is making enough pressure but it is bleeding off. There must be either a relief valve, check valve or an orface that is not correct.
Does your truck have the same problem with the brakes if you are in a lower gear and have the benifit of starting to brake with more pressure coming from the pump? Do you have a low rpm problem?

Sounds like the ABS is kicking in. Personally I don't like ABS - Kinda scary when you hit the brakes hard and nothing happens.

I've not had the problem y'all are talking about. At parking lot speed when I touch the brakes it seems as though they grab! This may be intresting the first time I drive in the rain. Truck only has 1000 miles so maybe this will change.

Thanks all for the replies. Ron--I don't think this is a low rpm problem, it happens @ 35 mph or above (I forgot to state that!). I'm hoping it is the abs kicking in. I also read somewhere that these trucks with the Cummins Engine get some kind of direct proportional braking system combined with the abs system for more controlled stopping. I did own a car with ABS and when you hit the brakes, you could feel them pumping--it was almost like a grinding sound--and i could feel it kick in through my pedal. Maybe I'll take her to the dealer--(that sounds scary, doesn't it?)

Yes I have the same thing. Please see my appends With "brakes" in title. Since I have 12K on it now I am taking it in for check. I believe others have complained about similar or pulsating on the rears.

I have had the same problem. In fact I was backing up to my TT Monday night and the power steering went out completely. After a couple of minutes it did return, this was with the parking bake set and the truck idling. I do beleive this is tied in with my truck howling. Read my long post on this.

Michael,
Try turning in a parking lot at idle rpm. Also, try applying the brakes at idle rpm. I get a sort of groaning sound and it feels like the power steering is not working. At first I thought my front end was binding up. It is to soon for a TSB on this. My dealer thinks it is the tires. I called DC and they turned it over to the engineers. If your dealer can't fix it DC should be contacted about the problem. If enough of us do this they will do something about it.

I have had the same thing happening to mine also. In fact it caught me a little unaware this morning. It seems to only be bad the first time you do a hard stop after you start the truck. That's what happened this morning. I had gone about 15 Mi on the highway when I had to stop quick. It feels like you just stopped on oil and the pedal pressure to continue the stop goes up quite a bit. After that I tried it again a couple of times, it still did it but not near as severe a dropoff. It has done this since new and the first time it scared the cr** out of me. I won't let my wife drive it yet because I don't think she can push hard enough to stop it in a panic stop. I have been reluctant to take it back to the dealer for all of the usual reasons so I will also be interested in hearing what they say.
I was originally pleased that it had full anti-lock as we have it on the car and it really does work well.
This has been the only problem thing so far, other than that this truck is better than sliced bread!

Sorry, I forgot my sig!
Now you can see what I have.

Ray,
Take the truck back to your dealer and hold their feet to the fire. Also, a call to DC getting them to start a file on your problem will help everyone. The more of us that complain the sooner there will be a TSB and a solution.
My other ride is a 1996 BMW R1100RT.

I have been experiencing the same thing. In-town driveng I feel it every couple days. I will be comming up to a traffic light and have it switch on me at that point where you just think you ought to try to stop. The pedal pressure is firm, but the truck just doesn't seem to be slowing down like it should. Kinda' like hauling a 7000lb trailer with no trailer brakes (when you had them 5 minutes ago)! I DON'T get the ABS reaction that I normally get when they are active. No noise, no hopping, skipping or jumping. It is more like someone just wiped my brake shoes down with a light coat of oil. If I push harder (Butt halfway up the back of the seat) it will stop rather abruptly, but that isn't the answer. I am concerned that when I do have the oportunity to pull a trailer and it happens that no amount of brake standing/butt lifting and pulling the steering wheel off will be enough to keep me out of the rear seat of the car ahead of me. I don't think it is a anti-lock problem per-se. As these aren't brake lock situations, just firmer than normal braking on smooth, dry pavement and no load. Can be a little unnerving and it cna be hard to act like you have it all under control with your wife in the passenger with both hands grasping the Oh Sh*t handle (pardon me, necessary for establishing a mental picture). Kevin-O would this describe what you are experiencing? How many others are feeling these SAME symptoms?

Newf Limo,
What you have described is exactly what I am getting. I have hauled my fiver (9-10K)
around about 2500 miles and have only had to stop on a dime once and Thank God she stopped. What are you going to do--take her into the dealer? I'm thinking we should. Let me know.

I think it's time for a visit to the dealer. I just have to figure out how I am going to deal without a vehicle for god knows how long. I was hoping someone here had the same problem and already had it fixed. Sometimes it is worth it for me to fix something at my cost than to be without a truck for a week.

Newf Limo,
The TDR is such a good place for info, both good and bad, that we all seem to have the same problem waiting for some other poor guinea pig to take their truck to the dealer.
I think that the brake problem we are having can't be normal so I suspect it will eventually require a trip to the dealer. I suppose I shouldn't complain 'cause I havn't been in for service yet.
