A buddy's '01 CTD 2500 4x4 NV5600 has a problem with the rear disk brakes. They have locked up. He drove the truck home with smoke rolling out the back. The caliper pistons and the slide pins are not stuck. He has very little ebrake so it doesn't seem to be the issue. The main pads were fried and burnt up. I have read some threads about the brake booster and a leveling valve? Does the power steering pump run the booster in an '01? Would the wrong fluid in the pump cause an issue? Is the fluid a power steering fluid or the ATF+4 like my '04? Pulling the ABS fuse didn't help. Any thoughts? Thanks.

the calipers in these trucks are known for intermittent frezeing and finaly locking completly ,I dont know why but they do and I bought my 01 from a hack dealer in ny 1 year ago and drove it all the way back to mi with the calipers froze up . The sad part is that the reman also have this problem sometimes, my brother works at orileys and has guys bringing back reman calipers for dodge rams a week later and they are frozen. I dont know if this helps but I thought I would share my experiance. Good luck

Sounds to me like the rebuilder is screwing up. I have only lost 1 caliper... and it was an original rear. Replaced it with a remanned unit and have had no problems. I would suggest trying lots of purging and some fresh calipers. What about a proportioning valve? It sounds like the pressure is not bleeding off once the brakes are let off.

Has the master cylinder been changed? If so the booster rod might need adjustment. This is often overlooked and is very important. If it is too long the master can not release completely leaving a slight amount of pressure on one end or the other, sometimes both.

My Buddy finally used some skull softener in his shampoo and replaced the calipers. So far so good. I kept telling him to do the obvious first but he just couldn't believe the calipers would both lock up at the same time. He never touched anything else up to the lock up issue so there shouldn't have been a master cylinder/booster alignment problem like Nick suggested. He got a loaded kit that had everything except rotors at NAPA.

Couldn't build a Briggs&Stratton go-cart...

It never ceases to amaze me how badly USA engineers, this new computer-dependent generation, have lost the ability to design mechanical systems.

If it cannot be controlled with chip, they are utterly clueless. From brakes that lock up for no reason to simple, pour pee put of a boot, evaporator drain tubes that soak your carpet, to death wobble steering, these guys are incompetent morons.

Engineers had to be smarter and better back in the 60's and 70's. Today, they are like sloppy carpenters with the attitude "a good drywall man will cover that mistake for me". No wonder detroit is broke and sucking us taxpayers dry.
