2001 w/40K should I retorque head to 125ft/lbs?

I am running a little propane and nitrous occasionally and have heard that cylinder head bolts could be torque to 120-125 ft/lbs to try and save the head gasket from blowing out. I know I really need an o-ringed cylinder head. I went to tighten them yesterday and found a rocker arm in the way of one row of bolts. Is there a short cut?

Al with Peirs said that if any of the bolt feel like they are stretching, replace them. So I guess you can reuse some of the original bolts even it they were intended to be used only once.

I am leaning to tightening them vs. letting them be. Any advice?

I would leave them alone but get the head O-ringed ASAP. Right now you are playing with fire and your headgasket will loose:(. I was only able to run with N02 about 8 dyno pulls before my headgasket blew.

Just the opinion of a fellow drug user.

If you do re-torque it, make sure the engine is cold, or the readings will be inaccurate. And no, there isn't an easier way, you need to remove the rocker-arm. I have done this on a few of my freinds 24-valves allready, so far so good. BTW, I had to replace my head-gasket, and I torqued to 130#'s, I wasn't even runnin' Nitrous or propane, when it let loose.

Jetpilot thanks for chiming in.

How big of NOS jet size are you running as well as propane.

I have a Powershot 2000 and was running a . 120 jet size starting at 10 psi up to 40 psi.

For the Nitrous I started at . 04 to reduce the turbo lag for better off the line starts. I did use . 051 at Muncie all the way down the track. I did notice that when I let off the nitrous I could hear the propane detonating. That was the last time I let off Nos before propane.

I am now afraid for my head gasket after reading all the treads.

Yesterday I went from 275 to DDIII's and your Mallory 140 (4140) fuel pump. The truck does run a lot better.

Maybe if I port the head and o-ring the head with a cam I could use bigger injectors and still able to tow.

Jetpilot, what gear ratio are you using?

Am I missing some thing here or did Cummins replace the torque to yeld bolts they ran on the 12 valve motors when they made the 24 valve??

Retorqueing is a temporary solution. You're a quarter of the way to pulling the head just to retorque, why not just go all the way and do it just once?
