hi all. i tried to make it to the dealer today but life got in the way so i'll try tomorrow. rbattelle thanks for the heads up on the fca more info is always good. jhardwick thanks to you for your input as well. i'll let you know what we find. thanks so much to all for the help.

I got the new CP3 installed today. The noise is gone and it appears that the abnormal idle problem is gone. I will need to use the truck some more to be sure. It also seems that the engine is starting sooner (less turning over) but again I need more usage to be sure. I will drive for a while before I reinstall the EZ. I have had problems with the Quadzilla and I am not sure if I will use it again as I don't want to have more pump problems.

slow six, glad you got it taken care of. mine goes in monday. i let the dealer know what you told me about the pump. also told them about rbattelle's suggestion about the fca. :) i'll let you know how it goes. thanks so much guys for the help hopefully they get it figured out this time. thanks again and i'll let ya know monday. sorry if i put the wrong face in here i'm still new at this :D

You guys out there beyond warranty with CP-3 issues, remember this.

JHardwick - try replacing the FCA. It's only a couple hundred bucks, which is cheap compared to a whole CP-3.

Ryan,

I just got in from Wi and called the parts department in time to get a price of $170. 00. They need me to pay in advance and won't be back open until Monday ... ... ... . it's 5:05PM. What is the function of the FCA? Can it stop the hicups and erratic high idle?

I don't know for sure if it will cure the problem. But if you're having that loud clicking noise like HighFinance was having, it might. The FCA is basically a pressure regulator. The manual puts it better than I can:

2003 Service Manual said:
The FCA is an electronically controlled solenoid valve. The ECM controls the amount of fuel that enters the high-pressuire pumping chambers by opening and closing the FCA based on a demanded fuel pressure. An audible click from the FCA is normal whenm operating th key to either the ON or OFF positions.

Note the part about the click. The FCA makes a clicking noise when it changes position. I can hear mine operating at cold idle during the grid heater cycling, and I assume it's because the fuel demand rate is changing rapidly along with the pressure from my fuel pump as the engine struggles to maintain combustion in the frigid air. In theory, then, if it's clicking loudly a lot it's because the ECM is having trouble getting the demanded fuel pressure and keeps switching the FCA to modulate fuel pressure.

That should give you some ideas. Your mileage must be up over 150k by now - have you adjusted the valves yet? Just throwing out ideas. One thing I don't know is whether you can have a failing FCA without a MIL. Are you still running the stock lift pump... the one on the backside of the fuel canister? I'm sorry if none of this is much help - I think I stink at diagnostics.

Good reading, but I'm afraid it's starting to sound like an injector issue. I have been thinking of getting some DD injectors, but having second thoughts now. At $170 it wouldn't hurt to change the FCA too.

My lift pump went out and is now in the tank and I had the valves adjusted @ around 140,000.

took it in today. of course when i picked it up it was normal. it does not sound normal to me. i guess i'll have to wait until it's more consistent. thanks to all for the info.

the FCA from chrysler is called the MPROP by bosch and 170. 00 is just plain robbery. Our Price as a diesel service dealer for bosch is a little over 100. 00

Went to get an FCA the other day from a local equipment service company, and the mechanic said it was the CP3, LOL. I had a list of stuff I was gonna start throwing at it, and he said he'd pull the scanner out and hook me up on Monday ... ... ..... we'll see, I've heard some awful good things about this company.
