Can anyone help me out here? I have a 04. 5 cummins 24v. When i am pulling a trailer and the temp gets over 210 it surges really bad. It doesnt stop until the truck cools down, would that be a govenor?

Since it does it when you are really getting into the throttle it could be fuel issue, filter clogged, lift pump not putting up proper amount?? bg

ya the truck has 80 horse bigger injecters but i dont see how that could be a problem

Because it will run the rail out of fuel if the lift pump is not up to the task, and cause heating problems. What are you towing and how are you driving it to get to 210? Thats working it HARD to get to that temp with a manual.

You really need to verify fuel pressure to the injection pump and make sure you don't have a bad pump first.

X2. . it also may be the LV on the rail. .

210° is pretty normal if your towing hard so I doubt that's the issue, but rather a coincidence. The thermostats aren't fully open until 207° so nothing to worry about there.

Ditto. My '05 sets on 210 when I am towing. Sets on 200 - 205 cruising down the highway empty. This has been normal since it was bought new in '04.

Barely break 200 even towing. Never see 200 empty. At 210 on the gauge it is into high idle mode to cool it down. Different trucks read different I guess but 210 on these gauges is high.

I guess I have never had 210° when stopped, but seems odd it would go to fast idle at only 3° above a fully open thermostat?

210 on the gauge might be 240 actual at the sensor, and even 240 is not that hot if your working the engine hard. The point is 210 on these fake gauges usually indicates a higher temp for some reason.

My gauge is pretty close, about -4° all the way up to about 240° (highest it has been. . silly air bubble when changing the coolant). .

But it is amazing that they are inaccurate at all.

My fan doesn't even kick on 100% until north of 215°-220°. I have heard the fan on auto's comes on lower.

I get all my temps off the SGII, not the dash.

I cruise between 201 and 208, the stat pops open (cold) at 216, and I've had 230 towing hard... that's using a REAL gauge.

ya the dealer said somthing about a air flow sencer valve being bad does anyone no if that could be the problem, it's an automatic not a manual to.

There is no air flow sensor on a CTD, he's grabbing at straws. :-laf

Start with checking fuel pressure, rail pressure, and fuel and air filters. Those are the common problems. A partially clogged factory air filter can collapse into the TQ tube under high demand and cause similar symptoms.
