I now am the proud owner of a new truck camper. It weighs in at 3200# as NEW and of that, 2800# are on the rear end. Just how much weigh is that axle good for? I have 19/5" Ricksons on order but I have heard that the rear axle is good for 10,500# and/or 9600# carrying cap. I think is an American Axle rear end but I am not sure. Can anyone shed some light on this for me? Thanks.

Frank.

FDrake,

Give us a hint. What kind of Dodge are we talking about . . . Ram 2500, Ram 3500 SRW, Ram 3500 DRW? Fill in your signature.

SRW truck rear axle ratings are always a little less than the total weight capacity of the two rear tires added together or something like 6,500 to 6,800 lbs. If you mount a pair of Rickson wheels with 19. 5 tires you'll have about 4,000 lbs. per tire depending on the tires you buy.

DOT uses tire weight capacity is they scale weigh you. Four tires on a dually at 3,042 lbs. per tire provide about 11,000 to 12,000 lbs. of carrying capacity. Dodge dually Gross Rear Axle Rating on the door post decal is something like 9,500 lbs. Don't know what that is based on.

Beware of that "as new" weight on a truck camper. As new means no water, no LPG, no tie downs, no television, no food, no canned goods, no clothing, no bedding, no camping/outdoors/hunting/fishing gear, and no personal items. That 3,200 lbs. "as new" will quickly reach 4,000 to 4,200 lbs.

Oops, sorry. I have a 2004 Dodge Quadcab SRW 1T long bed. But I am talking about the ACTUAL rear axle capacity and not the tires and wheels. I know that at some point I can put on tires and wheels that will carry more than the axle itself can carry. So what weight can the AXLE carry?

I just looked at the paperwork that came with my truck and it shows that I have a 11. 5" anti spin rear differential. I think that means the AAM rear axle. Correct?
Frank

The rear suspension, axle plus springs are rated 6500 lb on the Ram 3500 single rear wheel truck. Shipping weight on my 4WD quad cab 2500 is 7098 lb, so you have around half the the capacity on the truck empty.
