Not bursting...

my bubble! My sister-in-law has a 2003 2500 hemi powered quad cab. I have driven it and rode in the back seat for many miles on a family vacation this last summer. Six adults in the cab and we survived. More room would have been nice, but there is enough. Most of the time it will be kids in the back and the trips won't be extra long with 6 adults, so it is perfect for me and my family to be!

So... waiting on my 2005 quad cab Cummins I6!:D Oo.

The 6. 1L is going to be a Hemi engine. That article just confused the facts.

The 5. 9L Cummins isn't going anywhere for a while.

Here's my very uneducated guess on this: Either Cummins is going to increase the displacement of the 5. 9 I6 to 6. 1L or the articles are confusing the 5. 9L I6 with the 6. 1L Hemi. Cummins has a contract with DC to provide diesel engines for several more years, and from what I can tell, Cummins does not make any V8 diesel engines, and I'm sure they didn't start making one for Dodge. It would be too expensive, and totally against the Cummins philosphy. I don't thing any development of that significance could have been kept secret this long. All I know, is that I want a new Dodge Quad Cab, 2WD, HO 6 speed with an Cummins inline 6 banger. If I can't order one or find one somewhere, I will have to keep the '01.

Like Vaughn said - Relax

Also, well said Hyde. Almost everyone on this site is here for the engine! And it must be fun or we wouldn't be here.

Why would anyone really quit buying cummins if they make a V-8 - they still have the expertise in diesel engines. Would they really make one that was week and risk their reputation? Is DC ignorant enough to allow such? I'll bet that if they started putting V8 Cummins in Dodge trucks, most of us would drive the ones we currently have until we could see how the bugs (if any) worked out. Then we would have a 4th generation forum to look at before we made our next truck purchase. One of the major rules in business management is that PEOPLE RESISTS CHANGE.

Don't worry, Cummins has too good of a thing going to screw it up.

Felt like being mean

I sent Jim Mateja a little email pointing out his blunder :p

Hi Jim, I just wanted to comment on your recent article "Chrysler's Latest Concept: Take on Hummer. " You made a pretty major boo-boo that got many members of the Turbo Diesel Register in a dither! You stated the Jeep Rescue and future HD Rams will be powered a 6. 1 Cummins V8 Diesel. There is no such thing, nor will there ever be! Cummins does not build any V8 or V6 Diesels whatsoever. Dodge has a contract with Cummins to build the 5. 9L inline-6 diesel exclusively for the Ram HD pickup until the 2008 Model Year. The engine you were actually talking about is the upcoming 6. 1L GAS Hemi V8.

Just wanted to set this straight :)

Thanks,

Vaughn MacKenzie

If I get a response I'll post it :D

Maybe it will be a good or positive change? I love Cummins, and it seems like they will be offered to some extent for the next 2-3 years. But maybe this V-8 engine will be a good one? MB already makes one and they have been it the Diesel business longer then Cummins. So this might just be good for both Dodge and Ram owners. The next or 4th gen trucks might be as different as the 1st generation was to the 2nd. Not all change is bad. So I wouldn't get to ruffled up over this, time will tell, We might be talking about power up-grades and whats next on the wish list for our Ram 4000's just like we do now for the 2500 and 3500 models. I am excited and look forward to see what will be next. Cummins has been there for so many years as a powerful, low maintenance durable diesel engine. Maybe they will be apart of the 4th generation maybe not? But I don't think Dodge would take a step backward, and the in-line 6 that Cummins has provided sets a pretty high benchmark. Give it a chance, I would not paint yourself in the corner with a blanket statement like "I will never own a V-8 diesel". This might just be the replacement of the L-6, and it might be as reliable or better? There are alot of design advantages with the V-8 configuration, that the old in-line 6 doesn't offer.

a few comment on cummins V8 rumors starting;

1. as metioned before they dont do V8's except when they have to!

2. in this case they dont have to unless DC asked them and i am pretty sure they would say stick it. unless DC gave them the R&D to make the change.

3. v8 have to cost more to build more warranty work!

4. cummins knows that they can get enough power out of the 5. 9 to keep up in the hp wars

5. if they need to keep up in wars and meet emissions they can go to the VGT which they have not even had to do like other mfg's have had to do.

6. cummins has alot more aces in the bag you have not seen the last of the 5. 9l

7. will they stroke it out a little more maybe but stroking out to 6. 1 is not enough to even fool with. unless this is part of the plan to lower emissions and keep the power. ( i highly doubt that) big displacement more emissions (reason for ford 7. 3 to the 6. 0)

if the 6. 1 was a v-8 cummins it wouldnt last 300000 miles. remeber bigger is better?? the v-8 pistons will be the same size of ferd and duracrap's pistons

Vaughn,

Not to get picky or anything but Cummins does currently build a V8, it is the V903 for the military. True it is not used in OTR but they do build one as well as some V12, V16, and V18's.

Oo. Oo. . But I would have to put an extention on the garage or carry the extra two cylinders on my lap:( .

Of course when Isuzu (DuraCrap) builds a true heavy engine for Class 5 Chevy trucks, and big chassis vehicles, its the 7800, an inline 6 cylinder. And when Ford wants to offer Class 5 and up trucks a real engine, its the Cummins B5. 9. I think I-6 is here to stay, its where the real power and durability are found.

Just remember even though Ford doesn't own Cummins, Daimler-Chrysler(Dodge) DOES own Detroit Diesel, bought it piston, rod and cylinder from GM, and DC DOES own VM Moturi which makes some really decent V4/V6/V8 Diesel engines, and they own, or are owned by, Daimler Benz Diesel, no slacker in their own right.

So, could there be a V8 in the pipe, maybe, I just doubt its a Cummins.

I've said this before (as has every one else) the reporter maybe confused the 6. 1 Hemi with the new rating for the B5. 9 Cummins, which in the RV version already makes 600lbs/ft torque which at 2800RPM is 325HP and already has a VGT Turbo, and already has EGR and is no problem child at all.

whew..... And.....

I think the Rescue should be named Revenge, Bye Bye H2!

The V903 dates WAY back, too. It was a bus engine decades ago. It's like wanting to buy a brand new NTC.

y-not did you read the whole thread? The V8 in question turned out to the the upcoming 6. 1L HEMI :p

KCJackson yes I'm aware Cummins did make a V8 as well as V12, etc. I just wanted to make a point with Mr. Mateja without confusing him any further

Well, guys this past summer at the ATHS meet near Burlington, NC, we got to see a real straight 8 diesel engine, The "Gardner Oil Engine" in a 40's cab-over car hauler tractor. Just forgot the brand but it was built for over-the-road by a small company in North Carolina... .

It was almost as long as our whole trucks!

Imagine a 9 liter diesel with the valve cover extending between your seats.

Sweet!

Well not quite... Daimler-Benz bought Detroit Diesel from Roger Penske. Roger Penske bought Detroit Diesel from GM back in the early 80s. Detroit Diesel, shortly after the Roger Penske buyout, introduced the Detroit 60 series engines that were inline 6, 4-stroke cycle, and the first electronic controlled engines with the DDEC system in 1985. These engines have been highly successful in the heavy duty truck market.

Forgot about Roger, didn't I? I have always wondered why a DD never ended up under the hood of GM trucks from the beginning?
