Shout out to Goerend Transmissions

2006 3500 Mega Cab
5.9 Diesel
Edge Insight
Smarty – very light tune
60 hp injectors
5” exhaust
Ice Cold intake
Everything listed has been running on truck for several years.
158,000 miles

So I get up, drive the truck to work and shut it down. Truck ran normal all the way to shut down.
At lunch I go out and get in the truck. Wipers are running so I try turning them off but their already off. I cycle them on and off and they stay off. Could this be a TIPM problem?
Moving forward, I try to start the truck but it just cranks and cranks.
Upon inspection I notice my PRNDL display is nowhere to be found; the check engine, check gauges are illuminated and the red Sentry Key light by the temperature gauge is flashing.
I instinctively try checking the codes with my Edge Insight but it can’t find the ECM/PCM. I unplug the Edge Insight and try cycling the key three times to get the codes on the odometer. NOTHING. Could a bad TIPM prevent the ECM/PCM from receiving power?
I’ve never had the dealership do any work for me because of the cost but I’m due to take the truck in for the airbag recalls and the thought crossed my mind to have it towed there so they could do the airbags and scan the truck. $115 per hour / 1 hour min.
Any additional advice is greatly appreciated.

Things I’ve tried so far.

  1. Disconnected negative from both batteries for several hours to hopefully reset things.
  2. Tried my other never used Sentry Key.
  3. Disconnect the fan clutch wiring and try to start truck.

Nothing changes....It just cranks over but doesn't start and ECM/PCM doesn't show on Insight

I'm not much help on this one, but have a small tip about the dealership, make sure you don't get the flash were your horn honks if doors is open and you put in reverse.

If the CTS cannot communicate COMMS are down, hence the lights on the dash. Start checking fuses, connections, etc. Unplug the fan and check the power feed to the SCU of the driver side battery.

I know
I should probably know this but what is the SCU?

What, you don't speak fat-finger? SCU is fat fingered ECU. Either my fingers are getting larger of the blasted keys are getting smaller. I say the same thing airline seats but already know I am a fat kid. :)

haha. I'll try to go out at lunch and take a look. If I'm understanding you correctly the ECU gets some sort of power feed directly from the drivers side battery? I was under the thinking everything goes through the TIPM. I checked the continuity of all the fuses with a multi-meter just yesterday and they seem to all be fine. I'll double check them today though. I've left the fan unplugged to this state as well.

Here’s the culprit. Chipmunk got in there and ate through some of the wires under the TIPM. Nice and cold here in Wisconsin so working on it in the parking lot wasn’t fun but I was able to do some temporary connections with wire and wire nuts to get it fired up and back home. Now I gotta figure out how to do a long term repair. Anyone know where to get the plug ends or how they come apart?

The C1 60 way connector is PN 05135640AB, the C2 50 way is 05135639AA. Be ready to solder and shrink wrap a lot of wires. Also all the wires in the kit are two colors so you need to pay attention to the pin locations.

Thanks for info sag2. I found this drawing representing the bottom of my TIPM. From what I'm seeing on my truck I need the C3 connector. Do you know the part number for that one and is this something you can only buy from the dealer?
