Does any one have confirmation on the left hand threads for the fan hub and what size wrench does it take? I did a search on "fan" but nothing was coming up for the 3rd Gens; however, here is this thread and it did not find it.

I was in such a hurry to get the fan off that I did not realized I was doing my search in the FAQ section. Now that I have done the search correctly it looks like the threads are right hand like any regular bolt. A 1-7/16” wrench has work for several guys.

I was trying to use the 36 mm going clockwise and all I manage to do is round off two flats. I will get a 1-7/16” wrench and try it again, will let you know how tight I manage to get it after going the wrong way.

P Madrid, I have been turning my the wrong way also if it is standard thread. Did you get yours off? I will try turning the nut to the left tonight and see if I can get mine.

I finally got it loose going counter clock wise. I got it so tight when I was going the wrong way that my hook wrench had the marks of the pulley bolts heads and the bolts will have to be replace since two flats are now one flat.

An air hammers has always work for me on the 2nd Gens, but if you are going the wrong way, like I was on this one, it only leaves some real big marks on the flats.

The mounting nut is a 36 mm (35. 94 mm) but with the flat ends rounded off slightly. If you are using one of the 36 mm skinny fan hub wrenches it will most likely slip since they have an average opening of 37. 3 mm and less surface contact.

I used a 1-7/16" (36. 94 mm) Snap-On wrench but had to take three of the pulley bolts out to get it to fit since it is twice the thickness of what the fan hub wrench is. With more contact surface and a tighter fit we, had to get some one to help me, got it loose.

Since the engine is coming out of this truck, due to loosing a freeze plug and causing it to stick, I'm going to get a 1-3/8 wrench and make it bigger, using the fan clutch as a template and double checking it against a 2nd gen fan clutch.

So, to all of you out there, its is right hand thread and a 1-7/16" wrench works best. If any one has try a 35 mm wrench lets us know.

I got mine loose at lunch today. It does make a difference going the right way. As P Madrid said it is standard thread left to loosen right to tighten. I had to use a pipe on my wrench since I had it so tight from going the wrong way.
