I have a 2006 with 89,000 miles. The truck is not a daily driver. It does run weekly but not everyday. This truck will intermittently have an extended crank when starting it cold. Once the truck has fired it will be fine the rest of the day. I change fuel filters at every service. I also run a Stanadine additive. My thought process is leading me to believe that I may have a bad injector. I am thinking that one of the injectors may be leaking and not letting the rail build pressure quickly. However I don't see a puff of smoke that I would expect. The extended crank last another 3-5 seconds longer than normal. Any thoughts? A friend of mine that has an 01 says he runs a quart of trans fluid with every tank and suggested that I do that. I just don't know if a common rail can handle that. Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

First off, do NOT run the trans fluid in a CR. Bad ju-ju for high pressure systems.

If you start it every day does it still long crank on the first start of the day?

The extra 3-5 seconds could be an injector or just the system trying to synch after sitting. Trying find whihc injector that is causing that may be a challenge. As long as you don't see any other complications all it may need is a heavy dose of injector cleaner.

I thought the trans fluid was a bad idea on a CR. If it is run daily the chance of having and extended crank is small. I will give it a stiff dose of Stanadine on the next fill up.

Chrysler has found that a stiff dose of CRC can be effective, rumour has it that there will be a tsb some day

Bob, are you talking about a Common Rail Cleaner (CRC), I had a cleaner added every time I had the Fuel filter changed out, every 15K on my 04. 5, and once on my 07 at 15K. It was a dealer additive and don't know the name, do you?

Update

So my truck has been fine since I posted. I drove it all over yesterday with my Dad getting things for a project we are doing at his house. I came home around 4:30 yesterday, parked the truck in my garage and didn't touch it till today. I was going to leave today around 9 or so and it had the same extended crank situation. It turned over about twice as much as normal and I had a small puff of smoke. Am I just being to critical of this? Do I really have a problem? I just can't imagine why it would do this. I have run a half tank of fuel through it with injector cleaner in it. Do I need injectors. Am i hurting my motor? Is this the time to sell the truck?

I've owned several trucks including an 04, 05, and a 08 5500, and found the newer the truck the longer the crank after its been sitting... if the 08 sat for 3-4 days it always took longer to start and when the weather was very cold, below 20* even longer, and I just assumed that it was from the more advanced emission systems and the ECM making sure everything was correct before turning on the fuel... Mine never puffed smoke but would just start, when told me the ECM didn't turn on the fuel until it was ready...

to me it was just some start condition that wasn't meant for a few more seconds...

just my thoughts

My truck will sit up to 3 weeks at a time, it never cranks longer, regardless of temps, when everything is working properly. You may want to check all fuel fitting, I found a few loose banjos on mine, probably not your problem but worth checking. Good luck!

What is weird about this is that the truck has to sit overnight. I have been running around with it since and as usual once it has run not matter how long it will be fine all day. Also it will have the extended crank every now and again. Hate to dump 3 grand on injectors if not needed.

IO have the 06 also and have found that if I just turn the ign. on and wait for the light to go out it seems to start on on second revolution. I'm thinking maybe the rail pressure goes away while it is sitting for a while. bg

Only issue with that it is warm in Michigan and my intake heater is not being called for. It is in the 70's today. Or are you saying just waiting for the dash lights to shut off before turning the key?
