2006 Quad Cab,8' box, 4x4,Picked up new Nov. 23/06,24000 miles. BONE STOCK. On my way home from work yesterday I run out of fuel,or at least I thought I did. The truck started to stumble and sputter then quit. The gauge was on empty but I am sure there was still enough fuel to get me at least another 10 miles. Any way,I got 5 gal of fuel and the gauge came up between 1/8 and 1/4 of a tank. I then followed the starting procedure in the owners manual,Now here is were the fun starts. I wound the starter over a couple of times for 3-4 seconds then the 3rd time the truck fired,it emmidately revved up past a wide open throttle range that I never heard before even at truck and tractor pulls I never heard a truck scream like this. For some reason I thought the fuel pedal was stuck to the floor,I tapped the pedal,nothing changed,I then turned the ignition off and pulled the key out and the truck ran for another 3-4 seconds,I was just getting ready to jump out because I thought it was going to explode and I have worked around a lot of screamin diesels over the past 30 years in the crane industry and never heard anything like this . I didn't notice the tack. The white smoke was coming out of the exhaust like a wide open fire hose shooting in a strait line 15-20' from the side of the truck. Total run time of about 7-8 seconds. After this performance the truck would not start at all. Hauled the truck to the dealership and it showed an over rev code and a key code. After some tests and checks,no fuel pressure,they are now taking a pump off a new truck and putting it on mine. If this does get the truck running I am worried about what long term damage this extreme over rev might have caused.

I would worry about valve damage and piston damage due to the valves floating from the high RPM with no load. I believe that if it runs fine after repair you should have an engine that is broken in sooner than latter. Moral of this story is do not run them empty on diesel.
 
This may sound silly, but I hope you didn't put gasoline in it. A diesel will run away with gas vapors in the intake manifold. The computer will not fuel it past the redline, and I wonder if just one leaky injector can overfuel so much to rev it past the redline. If you truly overrevved it past 3800 or so, then there will be bent valves, and lifters.

there are many thing sthat will make a diesel run away. I cant see much happening to the pump to make it run away, but there could have been other mechanical damage to make it do it. I would hope that they check things over before starting it. I dont know about yours but the dealers hear arent to bright when it comes to diesels. and they will throw parts at it when they dont know what happened. I work for cummins, I havent seen this happen to a B yet but i have seen it on many other engine familes.
 
UPDATE:NO there was no gas in the fuel... I am sure there has been a lot of these engines run out of fuel around North America and never have this problem... Nothing against my dealership,but they are definitely not diesel mechanics. Changed injector pump,truck will still not start but there is now smoke coming out of the exhaust and there wasn't before. But now the motor almost wants to start but is making an awful knock,sounds like a fuel knock or as if you sprayed to much either in an old 350 which could possibly be caused by being out of time (bent valves). My question is if this is the kind of problems I could have with this motor I hope Dodge would at least give me a new motor and not try to rebuild the old one. Has anybody ever heard of or encountered a similar situation were a rebuild or new motor was needed.

Depends on the situation. Few had repairs,few replaced and the replacement is a FACTORY REMAN from Cummins. Do a search etc. Bet FIRST 'THEY"will want a compression test and if it is bad "THEY"will want the head pulled to evaluate damage. Once that is done then"THEY"will auth. repair or replace etc. DEALER won't have a lot of say but will be relaying info as they get more involved. "They" I'm sure will want to get to the ROOT CAUSE of what occured so it dosen't happen again etc.

Did you happen to borrow a can from a gas station? Might have been just a little gas left in the can. Something that dang near no one would think of as you are thinking of getting your truck running again. Maybe only those that are AR enough to think of this. Just a thought.
