What are the Pro’s and Con’s for the different brand Exhaust brakes?

aftermarket lift pump gph versus CP3 gph

I'm being given the option of a 5 position tune setup from my local diesel performance shop which seems attractive . Stock ,tow ,economy ,and 2 power increases. Not looking to leave a trail of smoke or parts. New to all of this. Economy is what I desire . Aside from hauling the Yamaha and pulling a 3k lbs trailer , a little jump in power would be nice. Any advice would be greatly appreciated .

Since it's an 06 You could swap in a larger turbo, and studs with an intake and that will give you a bump. Stay away from box tuning. Got with someone like CTT or firepunk, drd, who know what they are doing and aren't going to sabotage your truck.

You could also do an aftermarket lift pump to make sure that your getting the full 16-18psi of fuel pressure throughout the power band.

It took me 3 years and 8000$ in parts and labor for to finally get a truck that runs clean and has plenty of power and still get great mileage empty or towing.

I wouldn't bother with a 5 position tune... to me that's marketing and not much else.

Personally I'd look for a quality full custom tuner, not a shop that sells the same "custom" tunes to most people, and get 1 or 2 tunes.

The MM3 and UDC Pro will give you the best options, gauge pod, and tune... with the right tuner.

I've got an '07 5.9 and loathe the factory tune.
Even a Smarty Jr. 30 hp tune is a huge improvement over stock.
Stock tires, stock height and maybe a bed cover might be your best bet for mpg.

I've have had good luck with a Smarty tuner, it has what most people want, more power & economy, towing, but I don't use any timing tunes, either way just stay from timing tunes custom or not.

Could be some of the worst tuning advice I’ve read on here, especially for an 06.

Timing is 90% of the reason to get a tune.

Just tuning up the fuel on stock stoning is not a great idea either, the timing is very retarded and that pushes more fuel out the exhaust as heat. You also won’t gain any economy as that’s timing based.

Smarty offers tunes without timing for stacking boxes, nothing else.

The factory timing is not geared around efficiency, and leaves a lot of room for improvement without creating too much cylinder pressure.

The 6.7 head gasket doesn't like as much cylinder pressure but you can still add timing to them and get all the positive benefits.

I'm with 10,000 other owners that like box tunes, I like my engine in one piece, if you want to blow yours that's up to you, neither one of us is an expert at tunes, so it's your opinion against mine.

The 30hp tune is really just a timing tune, stock fuel and stock fuel limiters.... it goes to show just how important timing is to a tune.

It's also a mild timing tune, 30 free hp is great!

If you read the thread he is talking about a 5.9 not a 6.7.

If you read my post you'll see that I mentioned his 06...

The 6.7 comment was towards you and what has likely compelled you to run, and recommend, no timing. Either way the recommendation to not add timing is simply an uneducated statement.

A box tune on stock timing is a waste of money and not what is recommenced by most. I doubt you find 10,000 box tune users that don't add timing. Looking at your sig and how you use your truck the no added timing is what will damage your truck before anything else.

Please explain you're knowledge of my expertise on tunes. I don't have to explain my experience on tuning, just know that timing is what makes a tune, period... anyone who tells you different doesn't know a tune from a chip, or a dorito.

OP, seems like the tune maybe EFILive, where you have 5 choice tunes on the fly. Its not necessarily a box tune, but is a custom tune for the 06 MY ECM, using an autocal with 5 pre-tunes. You must make sure the tuner knows what he is doing, otherwise you can damage your engine. I ran EFILive in my 07 C&C 6.7 without issue, with the 5 tune option, WITH the EPA crap intact. But Idaho Rob did the tuning that has extensive tuning experiance with EFILive. Unfortunatly he was fined by EPA, so he closed his online retail shop.

I believe that is the EFI CSP 5 switch. I had that for a few months last spring & summer but never really liked it - and did not notice any real diff between the power levels and was unhappy with the MPG I was getting - and went back to Smarty UDC - upgraded to a Smarty Touch. I would recommend the MM3/Touch with UDC (pro?) if you are looking for a tune package. I find I get better power, performance, and MPG with even the Smarty Box tunes than I did with the EFI Live CSP 5 (Anarchy Diesel tunes is what I had). If you have an auto, there are MM3/Touch tunes that really make the 48RE shine!

Ya, it depends on the tuner, Rob had mine set up real nice. It was a big difference between the HO version vrs enhanced stock tune. I never realy used the tow (1-Light 2-heavy) tunes or the MPG tune, so I can't comment on those three tunes. However th HO actually seemed to get me better MPG, but again, I never calculated it, only going off the over head. But there was a big difference between the HO vrs Std.

Haha.. I don’t recall hearing about the tunes between UDC and UDC Pro. Sounds like that new tune is working out for you thou. Let me know if it needs any tweaks...as it looks like you’re still on rev 1. Trans shifting good?

UDC is better than box tunes, but UDC Pro is an amazing improvement over UDC. You can’t imagine the smile I have that UDC was better than EFI!!! That’s all tuner and not the platform :p, as EFI should be a better platform than UDC... but UDC Pro beats them both.

Yeah, I had some money burning a hole in my pocket and had gone to a local shop to discuss trans (Goerend) upgrades and we got talking and they talked me into it. I liked the idea of just turning a knob and switching tunes from tow to "street" or whatever, vs re-programming with the Smarty (I liked S-06 SW1 a whole lot when I was not towing). But I really could not tell any diff between any of them, and I ended up following the diagnostics to prove to myself the switch was not just a placebo! ;-) It changed numbers but I could not tell. When I saw you had the touch for sale I contacted you and removed the EFI Live. UDC Pro is waaay better. For me, at least. Heck, S-06 box tunes were a heck of a lot more "kick in the pants" than even the "race" (#5) EFI tune I had. And my trans is still working perfectly!
