My son has a 2006 D2500 crew cab with the short bed. He purchased it to tow a toy hauler with two motorcycles in it. It has towed very little and always well under the load rating. the majority of the 50,000+ miles have been running the LA freeways empty. Last Sunday it developed a very brief vibration which quickly developed to such a severe vibration that caused a severe shimmy. A loud noise was heard in the engine compartment and the engine died. All this happened in rapid succession.

To make a long story short it was diagnosed as a broken crankshaft. I searched this forum for posts of a broken crankshaft and found none. Has anyone heard of this happening to a box stock Cummins engine that has never been abused?

His truck has been out of warranty for some time however, it seems bizarre to me. Can anyone suggest how, or who to contact at Cummins regarding this.

Thanks for your help.

It happens for no discernible reason, just luck of the draw. If the crank actually broke and the bearings look good likely was just a minor casting flaw that was missed. However, since it was used ther eis not telling what the PO(s) have done with the engine.

I know the 318 had issues with broken cranks. Seen a few of them. Not heard issues with the cummins, but I have only been reading about them for a year now.

With all the trucks I have seen and worked on broken crank is extremely rare. The truck is out of Warranty I doubt Cummins will help

Cummins can't help. These engines are sold to Ram \ Dodge without any warranty. Cummins can not set a precedent by getting involved. If it was purchased new by your son there is about a 1% chance that Ram might help but I would sit not by the phone waiting for that call
Sorry to hear that this happened but machines do let us down for no apparent reason on occasion.

Mike.

out of warranty is out of warranty,Cummins did help with 53 blocks in the beginning but it only lasted about a year before the pulled the plug on that one
