Intake Manifold - Benefits?

Reading posts about "long crank times", "bad fuel mileage" "haze at idle" and now my head hurts!!!

2007 5.9 auto, truck has 249,000 miles. Unknown maintenance records, had the truck about 6 months now. occasionally i will get a CEL P0341 and P1740, but they will clear on their own. I know the trans needs a build, it is slipping and generating excessive heat. The camshaft position sensor is on the to do list. Other issue is long crank times, occasionally. Now that it is getting colder, i've started plugging the truck in at night and have noticed that the crank times is significantly shorter after being plugged in. Fuel mileage is pretty low compared to my 06 i had previously, (approx 10-11 around town, empty, easy on the pedal). I'm leaning towards bad injectors. anyone else have any input?

If the transmission is slipping that WILL affect mpg calculations. The 1740 is TCC OR O/D SOLENOID PERFORMANCE which could be a bad trans harness or transmission slipping or TC not working correctly. The 0341 is cam sensor rationality which could just as likely be an electrical system problem as the sensor. How much do the crank times vary from cold to block heater plugged it? There will be some but if both of those situations are longer than about 2 seconds there is likely a problem. At 249k and no extra filtration the goody is gone form the 07 OE injectors, they are a replacement candidate.

Cerberusiam, I have replaced the TCC and OD solenoid about 1 month ago, still same issue with trans. Smarty Touch (no tune, just using it for gauges right now) is showing trans temp around 200-210 cruising unloaded at 70mph on freeway. Also removed check ball from cooler line. transmission build is planned for the next month or so. The crank times vary wildly sometimes. sometimes it starts immediately, sometimes it cranks 4-5 seconds before starting. I'm having TIPM troubles with instrument lights, dome lights, and cargo lights. I'm wondering if it is causing more issues than just lights. I can monitor rail pressure, but have not done the research to see what pressures are normal.

Those temps are way too high for this time of year sans the thermostat in the front cooler stuff in bypass, which could be the problem. Slipping could also be the problem. The 1740 will set because there is too much difference between rpm and output shaft speed, slipping or TC lockup hosed or even electrical. If you have ongoing electrical issues you have to solve them first to have a good base to diagnose for other problems.

Thanks for the input. as far as the thermostat in the front cooler, are you referring to the thermostat in the square part of the front cooler that has a snap ring holding it in? If so, that was next on my list to check, probably in the next couple of days. TIPM is causing me an issue on lighting, and I'm looking for a replacement. checking with my local dealer now, but aftermarket, Dorman is the only thing I'm finding available, and it shows to be on national back order without and expected date. Also, I have read some on the TIPM and some things are saying that I can have the TIPM "flashed" by the dealer to resolve some problems. may have to look into this if I can't find a replacement.

Yes, if that sticks they will heat as it just bypasses the main cooling tubes. The TIPM's are just a huge pain when they go bad and they are in short supply. Dealer can reprogram some things but not all and they keep taking away things they can do with the tools. Dodge does not want to fix old trucks, they want to sell you a new one, planned obsolescence.

Found a TIPM that a local dealer was able to get by tomorrow. Said it had to be programmed to the truck, so i guess i'll be making a trip to the dealer tomorrow after it comes in. Hopefully that will alleviate the light issue and hopefully will help the transmission issue. Maybe it is not slipping, just not going into lockup completely. Anyway, injectors are next on the list. Thanks Cerberusiam, the help has been fantastic. I'll post back as soon as i get the TIPM swapped and see if that makes any difference.

Well, run the truck for a little while this morning, and then raised the hood and checked the cooler. bypass tube was same temp as input line, and coils were cool too the touch. tore into the thermostat and pulled it apart. little pushrod in it was stuck, and took some work to get it to turn loose. wasn't happy with the way it felt, so i turned it around and swapped the spring around and permanently blocked the bypass function. a short test run, and temps stayed about 30 degree's cooler than the engine temp. right around 155 or so. Popped hood and check, bypass line was still lots cooler than the coils, so i think this might help keep the temps under control. Gonna take it on a longer drive this evening to see if the temps stay down.

Hi John
off topic, but i have the same megacab as yours, and wondering what size tires you managed to put on,and did you have to use spacers in the back?

Hootguy, in the above pic it has 35x12.50x17 on it. no spacer up front, but had a 1/4 inch spacer at hub and 2 inch spacer between wheels on the rear. I have since pulled those and put 255x85 ( i think) all the way around on it without any spacers.
