I picked up a Gravely G series tractor and plow in April using a 5X12 open Uhaul trailer. Total cargo weight was probably around 3500#, but I STILL got over 20 MPG on that trip. Hand-calculated, of course.

I didn't realize you had a manual transmission, didn't pick that up on your signature line, sorry. I have the same gears 3. 73 and the tires are the stock ones that came with it... still have the original tires too. Mine is a 4X4 also. Mine is not a 3500 though so maybe you are hauling around more net weight than I am??? Maybe THAT is the difference? I am running a 2500. I do not know the weight difference between the two. It will make a difference. I know that I run two 75# sand tubes in the rear during winter time running and it makes a difference for sure. An extra 150# you would not think so ... but it does!

I was always under the impression that a manual transmission would give you better mileage due to less slippage in the power line. Not being an engineer or anything close to it... It makes sense that this would be the case. I defer to more knowledgeable people in TDR to help. Maybe you have a different DPF setup? Some talk about 'urea' being used or something to that effect. I am not familiar.

With the auto you have high gear ratio in the overdrive compare to the stick. there is about 2000 lbs difference in weight the 2500 comes in around 6500 and the 3500 about 8500 lbs.

Wow. My truck with me in it and empty otherwise is 7, 542lbs. I have weighed it twice and it is really close to the op manual book rating and the sticker on the door. The sales rep said I would have to buy higher weight class sticker for PA cause I would be overloaded with me sitting in the damn thing. Go figure out that one. PA sucks when it comes to DMV operations but then I think most states do.
Anyway... the great disparity between the weight and the overdrive must be making the difference then. I knew we could figure it out without any of the great motorheads chiming in but then I was kinda hoping they would. Later my friend.

Tags and weight is another topic all together and maybe HB will help on that one. If you get stop by DOT than it can go by axle weight to GCVW it all depends if he/she wants to give you ticket that day.

It appears that those two items are part of it and the speed. Like most of us that need to get stuff from one place to another time is money and we need to get there and back safely and in a timely manner.

It will be interesting to see how others are doing on MPG.

Have a great week
