Why don't you make yourself happy and go lease something, besides a Dodge, and just keep replacing every two or three years. That way it's always under warranty.

That's the only way I would have ever considered Ford's last two offerings, if I had been considering one at all. True, the Ram could have been near perfect if perhaps another $1000 or so had been put into it. At least most of the available updates are within the range of being performed by many of us on this forum. What about the Ford owner's with the 6. 4, and espescially the 6. 0, how many have the means or the $ to replace it with a Cummins?

Me! and let me tell you its been several years in the making. It would have been a Doge a few years ago but my wife liked the interior of the Ford's better (and I agreed they were better). But all that has changed now. The 6. 0 was a nightmare and the 6. 4 was no better; well OK, maybe more reliable but crappy mileage.

Comparing a 2010 and a 2011 Ford is not the same thing. It's always a crap-shoot with today's diesels but the odds certainly favor the Cummins over anything.

If Ford was so good then why do you see so many Ford owners putting Cummins in there trucks but you do not see anyone putting a Power Jerk in other trucks. Check it out in all the Diesel Magazines.

the cummins was a legendary motor until it got ruined by the government with smog crap, I no longer consider the engine to be a legendary engine in the current trucks. I think you will see more guys putting OLDER cummins engines in the 3rd and 4th gens one day, to me those were the real legendary engines. a 12 valve with the p7100 or even the old rotary pump to an extent, now those motors ran better than anything I have ever driven.

Even more complex emission crap on an even more complex engine with the furd and government motors vehicles. The Cummins has met the current emission standards for years. Furd and gov motors have had to scramble to meet the standards. If you think your '06 is complex, go look under the hood of a V-8 diesel! As for injectors, they all use the same design now. I would rather put 6 in a Cummins than 8 in a V-8! With all the spaghetti of crap under the hood of those things, can you even SEE where the injectors (or even the glow plugs!) go? To each their own, but I will gladly keep my third gen Dodge or would LOVE to have a nice truck like my buddy's '08 Mega Cab 3500SRW. It has a very nice interior. I don't know where you could say the Dodge's interior looks "work truck" like. At least they offer the "work truck" platform for those of us who use our trucks for what they were designed for! I do not want an overly fancy truck to work out of, but it is nice the choices are there for those who do want the fancy interiors, nice seats, etc. And the friend I speak of used to be a DIE HARD Furd guy. He now has two Dodge/Cummins, the above mentioned '08 and a '07 3500 cab/chassis.

I put 230,000 miles on my '06 Ram 3500 48RE in one year and nine months and had none of the problems you are whining about. My '06 pulled heavy trailers at least half of those miles, probably more like 60% of the miles.

The only problem I ever had with it was when it had 135k on the odometer it began leaking ATF from the tailshaft of the 48RE. I had a full DTT rebuild done but when it was torn down it turned out the only problem was a pressed in sleeve that centers and supports the tailshaft had slipped out of its "home" and tailshaft wobble wore out the rear seal.

Good luck on that Furd.

230k in a little over a year and half had to be all hiway miles, no wonder you didn't have suspension issues you were cruising down the interstate all day long, likely in a 2 wheel drive truck as well. 2 wheel drive trucks are useless where I live because of snow and slick roads in the winter, comparing a 2 wheel drive truck to a 4x4 is apples and oranges they have totally different suspension setups. most any vehicle can go that many miles if its on the highway all day long, to me thats not a good indication of reliability

It is certainly true that my trucks have all been 2wd and highway driven but I've put lots of miles on them and many highways across the nation are rough.

My mechanic friend who was a Dodge dealership mechanic for about five or six years and his friend who has been a Dodge dealership tech for much longer were out at my place a month ago. We were talking about Dodges and I asked them about their experience with Dodge Ram 4 x 4 trucks. Specifically I asked them if they had seen a lot of worn out front end parts on Ram 4wd trucks as is often whined about here on TDR.

Both disagreed. Each of them stated they had not seen problems experienced with four wheel drive front end parts. There are lots of 4wd trucks here also.

I wonder how some of you guys drive them and whether you have installed oversized rims and tires which add a lot of stress to front end components.

HBarlow,

Cummins cowboy has been crying about his truck for awhile. The only thing I can see it likes to stir the pot nothing else.

ok I guess I am full of crap, my truck has had stock wheels and tires from day one, I am not the only one who has ball joint or u joint problems, do some reading in the 3rd gen forums for a while. I would say it is infact a common problem many people have had it worse than I.

read this link, scroll all the way to the bottom and you will see what I am talking about with the ball joints.

QUAD 4 x4

most shops want 1200 or more to replace these, when you have to stroke the that check remember you said I was just a whiner.

And Furds don't have ball joint or front end issues?

My brother-in-law has an 03 Furd with the "legendary" 7. 3 and stock wheels and tires. Ball joints replaced at 100k miles. He has oil leaks, fuel leaks, needs new bearings, etc etc.

He's a die hard Furd owner and is now wanting to get rid of it.

As HBarlow said, good luck with that Furd.

I understand that you have had some problems with your dodge truck. I don't understand why you need to tell everyone what morons they are for buying a dodge or even considering buying a dodge. Please get rid of your dodge and take advantage of Ford's amazing incentives. By the way I don't think anyone said you are full of crap. Did you ever stop and think that people are tired of listening to the constant whining.

It is funny as I stoped at a local Big O in Carson City & I asked them about ball joints being bad on Dodge trucks & his reply was no "different then Ford & Chevy, they all have their problems". They do a lot of front end work on cars as well as trucks.

I have had two Fords and my current Dodge..... The bottom line is this. Big trucks, heavy motors and driving will lead to ball joint failures... plain and simple. There are many variable involved, but I can tell you this, if you own a truck, you WILL repair the front end. That comes with owning these vehicles. One last note, my ball joint issues have gotten a lot less problematic since I replaced them with quality after market products and keep them greased on a regular basis.

Dodge, Ford & GM all have thier problems.

Go the thedieslestop.com and ask some of those Ford owners about the problems they have. I think you will be enlightened to learn they have the same issues along with the biggest problem of all... . A Motor that breaks and sucks fuel. Thier new 6. 7 is yet to be proven... . Unless you are only interested in the COOl commercials Ford is using (Paying out thier *****) for to show off the new truck.

I'm going to have to throw up the BS flag as far as your mechanic friends saying they haven't seen problems with the front ends. They either were not being truthfull with you or didn't work in an area where 4x4 are worked. My last 3 Rams have had front end issues, all the same things. None have had any suspension lifts,or over size tires, they might perhaps see 1% off roading in 100K miles. All my trucks have been 3500 DRW 4x4. Living here in my area of Alaska, the roads suck and many are still not paved. I don't abuse my trucks because I want them to last. My '03 will be the last truck I will buy. I'm due for a complete rebuild on the front at 100K miles. My last two trucks I was lucky to get 75K miles.

Please feel free to turn your "flag" upside down and insert the flagpole in the orifice of your choice. You are free to disagree with me anytime you wish but not to insult me or my mechanic friends with your adolescent accusation.

I truthfully reported my own experience which is a total of well over 600,000 miles on three Dodges and I have never, that's NEVER replaced a single front steering or suspension part.

My mechanic friends had no reason to withhold information or to report false information. One of them left the Dodge dealership several years ago and the other one had submitted his two week notice when they were at my place. Neither of them works in a Dodge dealership or any dealership now. Neither one of them owns a Dodge truck.

ford is offering 7200 cash back on 2010 models good lord that is a bunch of money off, which means if you bought a 2010 ford at invoice less incentives you are looking at around 35k for an XLT which is compariable to dodges SLT, if you want a 2010 dodge same truck be prepared to spend over 42k. that is why I laugh so hard when I see people catting around in 2010 dodges because I know they paid so much money for the truck it makes my head hurt.

2010 Ford. Old design, old engine. They have a new 2011... thus the extreme cuts on price. They need to get rid of the suddenly dated inventory so they can make room for the new trucks and suck customers in and nail them for full price, or yay, 1500 off!

2010 Dodge is the current truck, why would they be offering deep discounts? The same cuts that Ford may be offering currently on 2010s were offered by Dodge not much over a couple months ago for the 2009s...

So for a fair comparison, dont go by model year; price a 2011 Ford and 2010 Dodge... Dodge has ALWAYS been less than a comparable Chevy or GM. Always. Who wouldn't want to pay less for a better built truck??
