Now I understand your reason for the oil testing. The concern I have do all 2010 6. 7 trucks display the same problem your having, 3000 mile oil change interval in stock form is horrible, if there all doing that I pass on buying a new Dodge, there is something wrong here, like the EGR & DPF devices are not right for the 6. 7 Cummins.

Some people have reported intervals closer to 5000 miles. I like to put my foot into it, but I don't tow or haul very much weight-- a couple of dirt bikes and some enduro gear is about it. Back when the truck was stock, I never got the "80% DPF Full" message, though.

I'm not sure what algorithm Dodge or Cummins uses either. I do know that short trips, where the engine doesn't reach normal operating temp. , are very hard on any engine. My guess is that is figured into the formula. You don't seem to have a lot of fuel or water contamination however. Not long after I purchased my 2007 5. 9L I called the Cummins Info line and asked them about oil change intervals for the new (at that time) CJ4 oils. Their response was, if you're using CJ4 oil to change it more often than if using CI4+. John Martin, in TDR issues 56-58 Technical Topics articles, made the same recommendation. Perhaps TDR could twist John's arm to write another article on this issue.

Zak, Nice infor keep up the posts. A couple of questions on the H&S Setup. What MPG did you see prior to the deltes?, and Whats is the MPG now? Can you reinstall the parts for warranty work? What spec is your truck?. . trans 4x4 etc?

Thanks,

Deo

It's a manual transmission, 4x4, 3. 42 ratio, CC/LB. It has had Bridgestone Revo 2's 285/70/17 for the last about 20k miles. The speedo is recalibrated.

On long highway trips up here at altitude (5000-7000') in the mountains, I used to get 15-17 mpg max; now I get 18-21 on those same trips. Around town, I used to get 10-14; now I get 14-19-- really depends on driving style. I bet at lower altitude on flat highways I could break 21 mpg. I use only the "mild" tune on the Mini-Maxx. I don't want to toast the stock clutch quite yet. I have towed a 3000 lbs trailer on "mild" and got over 18 mpg going up into the mountains and back.

To put the truck back to stock I would have to put the DPF section back in and tell the Mini-Maxx to program the truck computer back to stock. It's more of a hassle than anything. I contacted two local dealers who are cool with modifications as long as they did not cause whatever problem the truck develops.

Even on the "0" (no additional power) setting, it runs like a different truck.

Follow-up:

* engine now has 22844 miles

* Same oil as the prior sample (ie didn't change it since 15278 mi - now at 22844 mi)

* 7562 miles on oil, approx 160 hours

* deletes, H&S MM since 15278 mi

* Amsoil DEO 5W40

Summary:

* no wear metals or elements noted

* oil still in viscosity spec

* approx 0. 5% fuel in oil - not alarming, probably from idling

* TBN has only decreased a little bit in the last 2400 miles, from 7. 0 to 6. 3

* flashpoint is slightly lower than desired at 395

* this oil at 7500 miles is in better condition than Mobil 1 Delvac 1300 Super at 2600 miles in the stock truck!

I may have a bad injector or something, but after its fixed and I get a read on what the fuel dilution actually is, then the deletes will happen. Thanks for the thread and info on oil analysis.

Ken

I had my oil sample three times and basicly it all came back and said the 5,000 mile mark is good place to change the oil. Thats with a stock truck.

Latest update:

* Oil sample taken and oil change done at approx 25973 miles

* Same oil as the prior sample (ie didn't change it since 15278 mi)

* 10696 miles on oil, approx 200+ hours

* deletes, H&S MM since 15278 mi

* Amsoil DEO 5W40

Summary:

* slight uptick in Al and Fe, and K

* oil still in viscosity spec

* approx < 0. 5% fuel in oil

* TBN has only decreased a little bit, down to 6. 0 now from 6. 3 last time

* this oil at 10k+ miles is in better condition than Mobil 1 Delvac 1300 Super at 2600 miles in the stock truck!

I've been wondering if my truck even has the warning system for the oil and dpf stuff. almost 4k on it now and 3. 5k of that has been pulling a heavy parachute behind me. i can tell its in regen because it stinks. i've been debating on what oil to use, have basicaly used nothing but rotella synthetic in my 06 and will probably do the same with this one unless it starts the 3k oil change timing junk
