The Truth About Diesel Exhaust Fluid

I looked at a new ford while i was at the TS party this past weekend. When i looked under the hood, i could picture service techs shooting themselves the first time they had to work on one. I don't think you could get your hand on the motor for all the s**t piled on top of it. Poor, poor ford owners. Randy:-laf:-laf

Somebody else made te observation that " Ford put 10 lbs. of crap in a 5 lb. sack!"... I believe that was the quote that was made on another thread...

I am a big Cummins fan and have owned 5 since 92. I do feel however that Dodge will be significantly hurt by the new Ford diesel IF it lives up to the billing. Reason: fuel economy. I am skeptical but I just read another review in which they tested highway, city, towing 10k and offroad playing. The big 4x4 got a combined 22 mpg. If true, it is truly amazing. Typically this magazine has a relatively low number on MPG in their evals. This thing may be a market share eater. I only get about 19 at 75mph highway empty. That sort of fuel mileage in the Ford could save a lot of green for many people

I don't believe so-called "test reports" published in the current automotive publications anymore than I believe the lies, fabrications, and propaganda published in the news media. All of the writers are journalists with similar ethics, personal beliefs, and political identification. Few of them are truly automotive enthusiasts with a fundamental understanding of motor vehicles and mechanical concepts.

When someone I know and know to be capable of actual objective analysis and reporting tells me the new Furds provide that kind of economy, I will believe it, but not until.

I think it is accurate and fair to say that a V8 diesel engine in a light truck, or any truck, is a bad idea.

Hate to sound like a mother. But try and slow down. No reason why anyone should be driving over 55. The only thing Clinton did right the whole time he was in office. Saved lives, money, equipment, and roads. Please don't get mad I'm the guy in front of you that drives 55 MPH. My profile states one the same as yours but a 4X4, 3500. It has a new motor less than 10,000 miles and the chasis has 130,000 (orginal owner drove 75MPH loaded on HWY and engine did'nt last long) I don't know what my mileage is but way better than yours.

I think that was Carter's gig, not Bill's. Think where we could be today if his . 50/per gallon tax had become reality. CAFE averages and speed limits will not change human behavior, this belief is one of the failings of government as we know it. Expensive energy will change behavior, just look back to the summer of 2008.

"Ok mother":) gonna disagree with you about driving 75 mph, that was "not" why the engine did not last. Also, if you don't know what kind of mileage you are getting, how do you know it is better than the above poster? It probably is since you drive slower, but if you don't know... ... ?

Yes, if I piddle down the road at 55 I can get 22 or so. But I often run interstate at 65-75. Run with traffic or simply like that spot. But I was only saying that IF these new Fords do as reported, they will put a big hurt on GM and Dodge. I am anxious as well to hear how they do with real world neighbors and obviously longevity. Will they start out like the old 6. 0s and be parked on a new dealer lot with oil dripping from the bellhousing? Who knows. It is encouraging that I have not heard one bad review on the engine yet other than being a mechanics nightmare. I won't be buying one anytime soon as I am a fan of Dave Ramsey. Unless I had it for a specific need in my career or was independently wealthy, I won't be buying anyone's $55k truck. My 13 year old Dodge handles everything I need it do and gets reasonable economy as well. Think I will be only observing things for the next few years.

The fuel economy was verified by Four Wheeler mag. They tested a loaded to the gills 2011,towing,freeway and mild offroading and arrived at that figure. You'd definitely want to get the factory extended service plan on it. It would take NASA certified techs to fix it.

I will have to keep up with all the mileage reports as it goes along... Last e-mail I got was that the ESD was May 21'st. So maybe I will be able to get into it by the end of the month. Once I get everything in it, i'll get it weighed and keep up with fuel (and UREA) consumption. My mileage should be fairly real-world for an F-550, even with the idle time for the PTO driven air compressor and crane.

That was Carter's crap. Thank GOD we dont have to deal with that revenue building crap (the point of speed limits) as much now! As for the fuel savings, the 55 mph limit was in the days long before overdrive transmissions. On my Liberty for example, if I go 55 mph, the transmission constantly "hunts" between 4th and 5th gear. Cruising at 70MPH on the interstate is where I have gotten my best ever fuel economy of 30 MPG. Around town where I have to stick to a maximum of about 60 MPH, it gets a best of about 25 MPG.

It is your choice if you want to go 55 mph, but don't use the power of government to force the rest of us to do the same... and please stay in the right lane!

A friend at work just got one and drove it to the coast in Texas and reported back that the mpgs were 23 on the highway and it it had more power than the 6. 4 powerstroke that Ford took back on the lemon law. The fords come only with autos now his is a 4x4 3/4 ton 4 door with 3. 31 rears. Should make it interesting between Dodge and Ford but I dont think Ford can beat the torque, serviceablty,or reliablty of the Cummins over the long term. But my 99 ford 7. 3 dyno 324hp and 666tq when it was sold with 320,000 on the factory motor so maybe the new one will be as good as the old 7. 3s.

I will be impressed IF it stays off the roll-back and OUT of the service department... And I really hope it does!

Dyno #'s really don't mean much if you cant keep all the pieces in one pile.

I agree. But aren't those numbers very close to what the new Ram gets?

I wouldn't have a clue...

On the better side of this... If the new Ford puts that kinda power to the ground, I will be able to pass on open highway without first saying 2 hail marys', rubbing a rabbits foot, updating my will, and leaning forward to try and help the aero.....

All of this to pass a work-over rig crawling along at 45 MPH!!!. . hahahaha...

Seriously, I got passed once by a Geo Metro with 5 hispanics dudes packed in it... And all I could do was watch them go!!!. . Dang D-Max!
