The Truth About Diesel Exhaust Fluid

Does anyone know if Ford uses a reduced engine output on the cab/chassis models? Truck Trend:) has confirmed the Chevy at 397 hp and 765 tq. with the c/c rated at 335 hp. and 685 tq.

They will have a lower HP & torque rating in there C&C. I believe I saw it on the Ford website... Jeff

My company truck is a 2010 f350 extended cab 4x4 w/srw and a utility body,6. 4L auto. From new to 10,000 miles hand calculated millage was 7. 3 to 8. 1 mpg After turning 10,000 miles there has been a jump to 10 to 11 mpg. I sure hope the new engine gets better millage. There are a lot of things I like about this truck over my Dodge, the hood I can see from the drivers seat the wider, larger cab, gauges I can see when the wheel is where I want it and even the mirrors are better. But the engine and trans suck. I didnt buy my first Dodge in 92 because it was a Dodge. It had a Cummins in it!!!!!

Finally got my new service truck today. Its an F550 2x4. Engine is extremely quiet... To be a work truck, it has some nice appointments inside. windows, locks, mirrors, all electric. REALLY comfortable seat. And it had a decent stereo with cd and MP3 ... . A welcomed edition for the long drives. It drove really well (of course, unloaded. . )

Gonna spend the weekend putting my tools in it, so maybe try and get some weight on it and start attempting to get a base-line on fuel consumption... and DEF consumption.

The truck came in with a weight slip from Certified Public Scales and with it empty and the low fuel light on, it weighs 15,840 lbs.

Oh, found a tag in the truck that confirms that the new 6. 7L in the F550 is de-fueled to 300 hp. Torque was "unspecified"

Well, the first tank of fuel netted a MPG of 5. 2!!!!!... I hand calculated the fuel mileage and compared it against the digital display... they were within . 3 of each other. Hoping that gets better. Been doing a 20 minute drive twice a day @70 MPH with the cruise set, other than that, a quick trips to get lunch. Can't comment on the urea consumption, the indicator that alerts when you get to 1/2 tank hasn't come on yet, so usage appears to be at a minimum.

Had to take it to the tire shop and have the tires balanced. The factory does not balance them. But that was a simple fix. So far, its doing really well. Once again, a welcomed replacement for the tired old GM. Ford did an EXCELLENT job of designing a comfortable seat for longer drives. Although I haven't been very far yet, I can tell that it will be comfortable.

No... it's not a typo, it was 5. 2MPG... . I know. . scary isn't it??. . And today, the CEL came on. Took it to the Ford house and they checked codes, had a code for "failing to enter the regeneration mode"... or something to that effect. Tech. really didn't know what to do with it other than to clear it and see if it comes back... I'm sure it will come back before its over. .

The truck rides great! and I love the service bed/crane/compressor set-up... .

I had the opportunity to look at a 2011 F250 last week, doesn't look any worse under the hood than a 6. 4. The owner said the MPG is quite a bit better than the 6. 4 he just traded in. Still wouldn't want to have to work on it though, I couldn't see either of the two water pumps.

When I was in High School I had a 1951 Mercury, which was very old, with two water pumps.

Actually, you can't really see anything recognizable under the hood of if other than the batteries, two seperate surge tanks, and the brake booster/master cylinder.

The seperate circuit water pump is really a non-issue UNLESS it starts causing problems. There are MANY engines that use seperate circuit cooling.

I just hope that Ford remembered to install the valve covers..... I've looked around under the hood on 3 occasions and have yet to get a glimpse of the valve covers... .

On the other hand... the plumbing job uder the hood wouuld make ANY pipefitter proud!!!.

Yup, flathead V/8 239 cid. Loved them old suckers. I had several different ones in my high school days. The very first ones built, about 1932 did not have any! Just circulated by the water boiling. 1953 was the last year for them then the overhead valve showed up.

Oops, sorry not a 2011 ford :)

I loved the sound of the flathead V8. It sounded like a fine tuned mechanical clock. I wish I still had that Mercury. Was the flathead V8 on the Mercury the same as the flathead V8 on a Ford? I've been looking for a Ford, Mercury or Ford truck for a project car.

I'm getting way off topic here. PM me if you wish.

IIRC the Mercury flathead V8 had 259 ci and about 10 more hp (claimed) than the Furd's 239ci identical appearing flathead V8.

Cumminz,

Go buy the Furd but please remain a TDR member. We'll enjoy reading about your initial excitement about "all the wonderful advantates" and then, over a year or so, we'll enjoy your dismay, then dawning dissapointment, then dissatisfaction, then hatred of the Furd.

We know you so we'll trust you to report honestly here in TDR.

Yep, there is something to that specification. In my high school years, I could outrun a flat head Ford V8 in my old slurp and squirt 6-cylinder Chevy, but not the flat head V8 Mercs.

I think the 2011 Ford is going to put the 2011 DC to shame.

It certainly is a nice looking truck. It may be viable to those who lease vehicles, or can trade them every two or three years, as the owner of the one I looked at does. For something that you may want to keep for ten or fifteen years, as I do, that Ford is not going to be too "user friendly" as it ages.

Bill,

I too had a '50 Chev Deluxe 2 door in high school. It didn't take me long to get the main bearings loose and rattling so another juvenile delinquent and I found a wrecked '56 Chevy with 235ci six in a local wrecking yard and installed it in my '50 along with a set of Fenton cast iron headers, a dual carb intake manifold, and a lightened flywheel. I could beat the flathead Furd boys so badly they were humiliated. I won a trophy at the old Caddo Mills (if memory serves) drag strip by eliminating several flathead Furds but the one I enjoyed most was a '50 "Rocket 88 Olds). I think Chevy rated the '56 235 at 145 hp compared to the 105 of the original 216 with babbit rods and mains.

I had to have a machine shop shorten the shaft on the water pump and slide the pulley back a bit to clear the radiator. I can't remember now how that worked but I think it allowed me to use the '50-style wide pulleys but retain the 12volt alternator. I also removed the flat topped '56 valve cover that identified a 235 ci engine and installed the long end studs on the rocker shaft that extended upward to use the original '50 valve cover. It looked OEM to most who weren't all that familiar with Chevy inline six cylinders.

Harvey, I did not know that the Mercury flathead was 259 cid. I had 4 different 239 Fords and my favorite 52 Merc. however it had a transplanted later model 292 overhead valve Ford.

If you beat the Fords with your Chevy, it was because it was bracket style not heads up! Plus the Fords were heavy..... :) Gotta make racing excuses ya know. The old Chevy my friend had when I was a kid had a power glide and would not get out of its own way. When we visited another friend who worked on a Fire Lookout Tower, we all had to pile out and push it up the hill:-laf

PS: It seems like the 216 had a cover over the lifters and even the pushrods on the side of the head and the spark plugs even went through it. The 235 did not??

Remember when the old Fords and Chevys had torque tubes for the drive shaft?
