The Truth About Diesel Exhaust Fluid

A friend at work just got one and drove it to the coast in Texas and reported back that the mpgs were 23 on the highway and it it had more power than the 6. 4 powerstroke that Ford took back on the lemon law. The fords come only with autos now his is a 4x4 3/4 ton 4 door with 3. 31 rears. Should make it interesting between Dodge and Ford but I dont think Ford can beat the torque, serviceablty,or reliablty of the Cummins over the long term. But my 99 ford 7. 3 dyno 324hp and 666tq when it was sold with 320,000 on the factory motor so maybe the new one will be as good as the old 7. 3s.

Do you know if he hand-calculated the mpg or was it off of the lie-o-meter?

Got the "official" E-mail today... new Truck is being shipped down from the packager. Suppose to arrive on Monday, Tuesday at the latest. Hope it hurries... the d-max has started throwing a different fit now... . its jumping into neutral while travelling down the highway?????. . Stupid safety feature makes me pull over to a complete stop, shift to park, then back to drive to continue on...

CRAP!!... Just lost the D-Max on Friday... . Got nothing but 2nd gear and a slipping reverse... Had to throw a "bucket o tools" into yet ANOTHER truck to get me by until next week.

I thought I read somewhere that the GM guys think there beloved Allison was bulletproof???

And to think, this trans. was barely over a year old, not reman, NEW!!

Common sense and the laws of physics would tell me that an engine that has 30% more moving parts cannot be more efficient than one with 30% less moving parts all things being equal.

Yet another reason for them to switch to Dodge. :D

Can't... it wouldn't look right to have a Cummins emblem on the fender and Caterpillar on the door. . !!. .

SO, we're going Ford. . I can't see where it can be any worse than the GM products. .

After a few threads about the new Fancy Duty and the new Ram on another forum, it is official, Furd owners have to be some of the most hard headed individuals on the planet.

They must have been born with blue ovals covering their eyes and plugging their ears.

I think the Sick. Ohhs were worse than GMs. The Furd drivers trying to use them for commercial service spent 1/2 their time stranded on a highway waiting for the rollback wrecker. GMs did have injector and overheating problems but I have never seen anywhere near as many GMs sitting on the side of the highway as I have Furds.

Me either... but I wonder if thats just simply a case of there being many more Fords than GM's being bought... The wrecker driver that picked me up said that they had heard we were going to Fords, and they were talking about adding another roll-back... He said they haul in WAY more Fords than ANYTHING.

Apparently my truck has been delayed again... haven't seen or heard of it showing up again today. .

You're probably correct. I don't know about now but several years back there weren't that many Isuzu/Alllisons on the road.

It obviously wasn't meant as a joke but the wrecker driver's comments are funny as ... ... , well except to Furd owners. Who knows the quality and reliablity of Furd trucks better than the towing companies?

Perhaps your scheduled new Furd has broken down already.

Furd must have offered the new trucks to your company mighty cheap or the decision makers at your company who select trucks must be clueless when it comes to overall operating costs.

like i told my buddy who works in the state police crime lab when his reason for not bringing the beer was he can't go into the liquor store wearing his state police shirt, put a postit note over the embroidered part with the seal and go for it, just a blue shirt then :-laf

bet you'd happily scrape the big C off the side of the truck :D

well... hhhmmm... not sure what to think about the last e-mail I got. . Said the new trucks were delayed yet again due to PTO "glitch"????? Not sure if that "glitch" is on the builders side, or the Ford side... No new date on expected delivery.

"bet you'd happily scrape the big C off the side of the truck"

What I would REALLY like is a Ford F-550 Crew Cab with an INDUSTRIAL Cat C-7 in it... Not the OTR C-7... .

Does anyone know if Ford uses a reduced engine output on the cab/chassis models? Truck Trend:) has confirmed the Chevy at 397 hp and 765 tq. with the c/c rated at 335 hp. and 685 tq.

I Spy

I have been spying on some of the Powerstroke forums. Most of the posts regarding hand calculated fuel mileage indicates that the 2011 Ford drivers are getting between 15 and 19 MPG's unloaded, mixed city and highway driving.

That sounds about normal for what one would expect. If it is indeed that low on average, still quite good for a vehicle of that size

I've been doing the same. I noticed one or two of them say they've been seeing 20-22 only highway miles.

A nice improvement over the 6. 4.

I wish they wouldn't... . when a work truck is de-tuned, it REALLY doesn't help anything. You end up abusing the truck more when you have less available power. And typically, you end up with poor fuel mileage. I can understad putting a speed limiter on the 450-550 C&C trucks... but they need to keep all the torque available... Unless they are afraid there engine/transmission can't hold up???.

IMO, there is no need for 350-400 HP in a 4500-5500 series truck that may be driven by non-owners (employees). I had some blockheads (employees) who could get into trouble with a 135HP Mitsubishi FE HD. My 4300 IH with the 195HP/520 TQ DT466 carrying a 21' Holmes steel flatbead was "adequate", 250HP would have been more than sufficient. MPG on that truck was very good also, much better than a F550 with a 6. 4.

I've been driving a 4500 D-max for 6+ years now. There have been countless times when the truck would not move forward on a location. The truck wasn't stuck, just didn't have the power to move forward from where it was sitting. I would actually have to back up some, then go forward at full throttle and "bang" the truck thru a location. Years of having to do things like this have taken their toll on the front suspension and other components. I don't want to abuse my service truck, its how I make my living. But it's been a necessary evil sometimes. Being so underpowered, you have to keep the poor thing matted until you get up to 70 mph, twisting up the little d-max to 3200rpm in every gear... Years of that take their toll, on durability and on fuel consumption.

I DO understand about some employees intentionally abusing company vehicles though. .

My in-law had his own business and had a 1-ton that his crew was driving... . they ran it out of engine oil and wiped out the camshaft and various other parts. After I repaired the engine, two weeks later I got a call saying that the truck was broken down in a major intersection and would not restart. I asked my bro-n-law if it had any oil in it, he pulled the dipstick and low and behold, EMPTY. I told him to fill it with oil and call me back, when he called back, I THEN told him where I had installed the MURPHY shutdown system and how to reset it. He fired the entire crew that day!. Come to find out, they hadn't been doing any maintenance checks on ANY of the equipment.
