Greetings. I am new to the forum and new to cummins. I have a 2013 Ram 2500 which I use to tow (4k-12k lbs) regularly. It has 85k miles. Ive only had it for about 4 months and recently it began throwing a p0871 at times and would shift very erratic. Stopping and shutting truck off normally works. Light had shut off and now showed up again with a p0871 and a p2706. Any suggestions on this would be greatly appreciated before heading to trans technician. Thank you

First of all welcome.

There once was a member that went by TransEngineer on this site and others. Have you googled the code for results? Assuming you have a 68RFE, search p0871 68rfe. Below is a TE response based on that search: Not all of it applies as you haven't changed valve bodies but the gear when code appears may help.

TransEngineer states:
Do you know what gear you're in when it sets the P0871?
With the same fault occurring with two different valve bodies, I agree the VB is likely not the issue (unless they both have SSV bores that are identically worn!). That leaves wiring and the TCM as the possible culprits. I would probably suggest a wire swap to diagnose it, but that depends on which gear it sets in. Try driving it and then when you get close to 125°, tap it down to manual "3" and see if it will set (in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd gear), or if you have to be in 4th gear or above to get it to set. Let me know and we'll take it from there...

Good Luck!
