For something like that you will likely find the best power and economy with TH engaged. Empty you would likley find the best economy with TH off. I lose at least 1 mpg running TH on my commute to work, that tells me that the engine isn't running where it should be for that load and it's just wasting fuel turning additional rpms.
I'll admit I was VERY skeptical of 3.42's before getting some miles on this truck. I had planned to swap the gears for 4.10's but that's a distant memory now. The 3.42's and the 6.7 work together very well, better than my 5.9 and 3.73's did. I'm honestly shocked Ram went to 3.73's over the 3.42, especially when I run the numbers on rpms vs speed. IMO they would have been better off offering 3.42's and 4.10's and dropping 3.73 completely.
As I have mentioned before to buy my truck again I would get the same setup but with 3.42's like I had in my 11 HO DRW. YES even towing my 35k combined!
