For something like that you will likely find the best power and economy with TH engaged. Empty you would likley find the best economy with TH off. I lose at least 1 mpg running TH on my commute to work, that tells me that the engine isn't running where it should be for that load and it's just wasting fuel turning additional rpms.

I'll admit I was VERY skeptical of 3.42's before getting some miles on this truck. I had planned to swap the gears for 4.10's but that's a distant memory now. The 3.42's and the 6.7 work together very well, better than my 5.9 and 3.73's did. I'm honestly shocked Ram went to 3.73's over the 3.42, especially when I run the numbers on rpms vs speed. IMO they would have been better off offering 3.42's and 4.10's and dropping 3.73 completely.

As I have mentioned before to buy my truck again I would get the same setup but with 3.42's like I had in my 11 HO DRW. YES even towing my 35k combined!

I'm trying to get comfortable with 1100 to 1500 rpm. It seems to be what the rfe goes to in town unloaded. This week has been just local stuff around palm springs. I guess it won't hurt it? Fortunately 90% of my use is towing and in mountainous western regions. I love how it sounds at say 1700 or even 2100.

Simply run TH and RPM's will stay higher.

Won't hurt a thing running like you are but IMHO it's NOT a driver friendly experience.

Especially with the 68rfe, the 2014 2500 service truck I drove at 10k GVW sucked in T/H, but then I never found a good combination for that truck with the shifting strategy.

I just came from a ZF 8 speed in a ED. Probably the most refined transmission in the industry. This rfe is as I understand reliable and thats all I care about. Towing it seems to be more at home than empty. Still, its crude compared to the ZF. Not complaining, I realize a mid duty transmission, but in my opinion not a grocery getter. Its made to work, we use it as intended. I would never go back as long as we continue to rv nationwide.

Cap on the ED forum is noticing about 250 rpm increase on his 19 over my 18. I think my 18 will get better mileage unloaded at say 70 than a 19.
