I have a 20 with factory air . when unhooked mine will not go into alt ride mode until it feels the weight of the trailer. .

I have a tool box that weighs 2-300# and a 200# hitch. Added RV placed in ALT removed RV truck stays in ALT. I have had the hitch removed and it stays in ALT.

It will not come out of ALT until you manually select NORM, but if the payload is light enough it will not actually be riding on the lower overloads. There is a minimum pressure that needs to be in the airbags so even in ALT with a light load you will be back at NORM height, regardless of what the dash says. 500lbs is not enough for my truck to go into ALT, or to ride on the lower overloads if I was already in ALT.

Even with my B&W 5th wheel hitch and 400lbs of cargo aft of the hitch it won't drop into ALT.

My truck rides at 55" to top bed back corner with or without the 6k pin. Seems like the newer trucks act differently than mine being the first year for the rear air ride.

The literature states they work the same, but that's just overall operation.

I know that the overloads changed sometime between 15 and 17, and I think again in 19, but that shouldn't have any effect on going into ALT without much payload.

Next time your truck is at it's normal empty mess with it. Check the height then go into norm and check the height again, and then see if it will drop back into ALT.
