rear filter on my 20 looks to be a cartridge type filter, so I think we reuse the outer plastic housing and simply replace the inside, doesn't look to be that bad tho, I drained mine for the first time last night. I bought the Geno's cap for the oil filter and plan to pull from the right fender well, just looked at it and it seems like it should go.

yeah, I did not look at it while I had it on the lift last night, I guess I'll follow this thread and find out next month...o_O

Remember if this is your 1st oil filter changer the factory Gorilla installed the filter so is really tight! Don't ask why I know! As for fuel filter's there very straight forward under the hood and underneath near rear axle.

when I looked from under the truck I could not see the filter so looks like the only way to gain access is by the wheel or remove the air cleaner ???

Intake looks like a PITA to remove on my 20. Guess we'll see next month who wins.. (TOP or SIDE).. either way I'm putting the cap on cause Im sure I'll spill it and its harder to clean up than a brr.

I'll let ya'll know what the verdict is.

I go thru the side. I don't take the wheel off, just turn it all the way to the right. I use a cap similar to what bcbender uses. If you don't take the air cleaner assemble out and go from the top, you HAVE to turn the filter sideways to get it out. A lot of this process is with 1 hand. Some guys use a gallon zip lock bag to 'catch' the filter before they pull it out. It's a messy process if not done right.

If not done by mid June, I will do a write up. Almost done with my AUX tank install and I am taking pictures to help someone in the future on that one...

I went thru the side on my ‘20 just like I did on my ‘15. Unscrew filter and let it sit down on frame screw Geno’s cap on and turn filter side ways and pull out. No big deal.

You can think your whiz kid engineers for there design of this. I sure they the Ram boys. Looks good on paper or whatever they design it on. But they never work on it.

Well this was explained at the first TDR rally that I attended, at the Cummins plant in 2013.

The explanation was that the engine has had the oil filter in this location since it was introduced on the Dodge trucks in the 1980's.This location of the filter had not been an issue until the new frame redesign, for the 2013.5MY 3500 series trucks with the 2500 being introduced in 2014 time frame. Cummins informed the design team for Ram that this frame redesign was blocking the service location of the oil filter removal. Ram stated that this was considered, but the frame cross member was required to allow for increase in towing capacity of the new trucks. The design team did consider this but with the demand for heavier towing capacity, the frame had to be beefed up. They also stated the the filter could be removed from the passenger side wheel well. Which is similar to the 2007.5 and up truck for the fuel filter on the driver side trucks removal, until they redesigned the fuel filter access point around 2010.

Just stating that Ram and Cummins did look at this issue, but sometimes service has to take a back seat to structural integrity of the truck frame.

I here what you are saying. But I bet ya that the ones that stated that it good be removed from the passenger side wheel well don't change there own oil if they even drive a Ram. They just made it harder for folks like me that are getting older.
