I’m getting ready to order a 2020 3500 Cummins mega cab dually. Or at least I think I am, I like the idea of the mega cab, having a family of 4 + a dog, and transitioning from a class a RV to a longer fifth wheel, we know we want room in cab for stretching out our legs on longer road trips. I’ve already come to terms with the added difficulties of having a short box with a fifth wheel and I can handle that just fine. Here’s my question, Is there anyone on here with first hand experience with this set up? And if so, can you fit a truck bed tool box between the fifth wheel and the front of the bed. Having the extra room in the cab behind the seats will be great for groceries and such, but only if I have a tool box to store all the tools and travel necessities In the bed box. If I can’t find the bed box with the fifth wheel then I probably need to go with the Crew Cab and a long bed, but I think I’ll be unhappy with the length when not towing... the daily life I think it would get pretty annoying. Anyways, I think I know what I’m going to do, just wanted to hear some first hand experience before I make a final decision.

The new Crew Cabs are pretty roomy. I like the room of the Mega cab but I would rather have the long bed. When the real 5th Gen comes out, I will get the crew cab. Under seat storage is another consideration.

I have a 2015 Mega Cab and have a 43' toyhauler.

The upper trim levels of the '19+ have a subwoofer that ruins the under seat storage. I can't get nearly as much stuff under there as I did on my '15. I have considered removing it.

So is there enough room for a truck bed tool box in front of the fifth wheel pucks on your mega cab?

Although it really doesn't matter for much, but this sub forum is for Cab and Chassis trucks. Only reason I mention it is that I own a cab and chassis 5500 and sometimmes like to come here to read cab and chassis info.

Cheers, Ron

You would have to get a small tool/tank to fit without blocking the pucks. Almost useless in my eyes but thats my preference. I am contemplating (and pretty much made up my mind) that I am going to replace the air ride 5th wheel hitch on my toy hauler with a goose box hitch so I can cover the front pucks with a reasonable Aux tank.

Thanks, that’s what I needed to hear.

If you aren't shy of parting ways with some Ben Franklin's these guys just may have what you need.

FWIW, I haul a 5th wheel with a short bed (crew cab). Prior to this truck I was a lifetime long bed owner. While there are days I regret buying a short bed none of them have been while towing my 5th wheel, and I've had it in some fairly precarious (tight, off camber) situations. My regrets come from the day to day stuff I use my truck for. It really comes down to specific uses aside from towing.

Highway Products makes some nice stuff. Their hauler body is pretty nice, too. Not as nice as the Elite Hauler from Utility Bodywerks, though.

Their proofreaders really suck. I hope their products are better than their proofreaders.....

I can only assume they really meant “inevitable”.

They are the real deal. Started out building boxes for tractor trailers. A friend has one of their boxes behind the hitch, admittedly one box is difficult to form a realistic opinion on but from what I see they are top shelf quality. Just one opinion, of course.

That’s the exact box I am planning on getting, it was just a question of will it fit in front of the fifth wheel on a mega cab short bed or do I just need to accept that I should get a CC with a long bed.

Those are nice boxes, all the pictures they show are of long boxes save one and that one with a short box would cover the pucks for a 5th wheel (pic shows box with a gooseneck). The box that goes at the tailgate is nice but I would consider that WITH a box in the front of the bed also.
I should point out that I have no bad experience towing with the Mega Cab, it has plenty of room to maneuver trailer wise and pulls nice. I personally just prefer the full bed for stuff while not towing, an aux fuel tank/tool box that is good size and the option for larger aftermarket fuel tank replacement.

yup, that’s really what I need too. We full time in our RV, so I have to have room for a truck box for all my tools and such. It would just be nice to have that space behind the rear seats too. I wish a local dealer had a mega cab to look at, having to make a decision without seeing it first hand makes for a hard decision.

If you full time I would DEFINITELY wait until I could side by side compare. Check the rear seat and folding mechanisms also to make sure you know how they function. They are different and could affect your actual storage. As TFucili stated, the new ones are different in the crew cabs now so maybe that aspect isnt as much of a difference between CC and Megacab now.

I modified my long bed Truck Trunk box twice. This box with in my 93, 2001.5(long boxes) and 2015 short box. First time was the inverted notch in the back lower rear the clear the Demco 6099 picture frame, and then I got a new fifth wheel with a different pin box. So I shorted it front to back 4" on the front side. Which also required shortening the sliding lid. Simley's in Mount Vernon cut down the lid sheet and put in their break to do a new turned down lip. When there is a will there is a way.

Here it is after being shortened.

And I added a lib on the upper shelf to keep things from falling off.

I always slide the hitch back at check in, to allow the B&W latch handle to switch open.

I have the pucks and wouldn’t trade them for any other setup, but that’s with a long bed and I did do a reorganize of my gear to get rid of a full time toolbox on this truck. I also wouldn’t buy a short bed.

I did want more fuel so I added a Titan 55 gallon tank so that I didn’t lose any bed space and so far 55 gallons has been more than plenty.

The upper trim levels of the '19+ have a subwoofer that ruins the under seat storage. I can't get nearly as much stuff under there as I did on my '15. I have considered removing it.

It’s on my ‘18 too. I originally thought I would have to remove it but I’ve been able to store everything I need year round still. In the winter I add a small toolbox to the bed for chains, straps, and other stuff.
