Help! Dodge Cummins in boat

I'm stumped

A non-member friend had 13k miles on his 99, 2500 ISB, and a Pennzoil filter broke up plugging his oil passages. (same dealer had another truck come in, same week, same problem, when it's Fram filter broke up). Anyway after a three week wait, they returned his truck with a warranty replacement engine. This same truck is now getting only 15 mpg, instead of the 19 or so it used to. It now smokes on a cold start, and the exhaust smells different. Dealer basically told him to get lost. I'm wondering if the 99 & 2000 engines are the same CPL number. They used his original computer with this new engine. Any ideas?

Maybe the new engine needs to be broken in and then the smoking will stop. Sory to hear about the oil filter incident!

Happy new year to everyone! Sam

Its new, so it will get less mpg than the old engine. As everything seats, and wears appropriately the mpg's will slowly start to climb back up (10,000-20,000 miles depending on driving) The blue smoke isnt smoke. Its fuel vapors exiting the exhaust due to a cold combustion chamber at start up. Nothing to be alarmed about.

Good thing he wasnt a member. He might have had bigger injectors or some box on that the dealer would have tried to blame the problem on. Better not let the dealer see this guy talking to anyone from the TDR. That usually gets you an automatic "warranty denied".

This is why I tell people to quit buying the cheap $2. 99 filter junk, and quit using that Pennzoil ca*p too! I'm sorry, but you get what you pay for! Stick with the factory filters, you can't go wrong.

I do agree with Chad... . The replacement engine is too new. It's going to act just like a brand-new motor because that's what it is... brand-new. He's going to have to start the break-in cycle all over again.

I agree with MikeR, you get what you pay for. Aren't the factory filters actually Fleetguard filters with the Mopar name on them for about twice the cost?

A budget minded savy shopper might want to consider Geno's or Cummins if you can get the fleet price. #ad

I believe he is saying the Pennzoil and Fram filter is the same. ?? That is the way I understand it.

A friend of mine with a '00 QC 2500 was putting Fram filters on his truck. The second he mentioned that to me I insisted he go out and get a Stratapore and change that filter TODAY. He did.

It is scary to think about the scores of hapless souls that stick Frams or any other cheap filter on their new Dodge/Cummins pickups because that is what they've always used #ad

Vaughn,
I guess this is a good example of "good enough" or "My granddaddy used them, my daddy used them, and I'm going to use them!"

just don't get it anymore!

I jest ordered 6 fleetgaurd stratopore oil filters and 2 fuel filters from Genos. I Change my oil every 5K miles vice 7. 5K.

Good price/quality, delivered to your door. What more could you ask for? #ad

I use the Stratapore's in my 97 12v too. I get them at the Case-IH dealer here in Lawrence,KS. Some of their big tractors have the same engines we have in our trucks!

The 24v engine requires an updated oil filter. This filter will withstand higher oil pressures without coming apart. The old 12 valve filter will fit but it may come apart as your friend has experienced. In reguards to your friends new engine, have him check the intercooler clamps and connecting hoses. One of by friends had the same problem. The dealer had put the clamps on but failed to tighten them. Good Luck.

Hey porky, I see you have moved away from the rat race of California (as you said you were going to)... how do you like it there?

1tuffram, actually MikeR does use the Fleetguard filters... he works just down the street from Cummins NW. #ad

Before adding my Amsoil Dual Remote Bypass oil filtration system (and subsequently switching to Amsoil full flow and bypass filters), I used to purchase my Fleetguard filters from both Geno's Garage or Cummins NW... whatever was more convenient for me at the time.

Hello Everybody,

I'm a new TDR member and wanted to jump in and find out where I can get the best advice on what filter to use and where to get them. You guys scared me with talk about the Fram filters coming apart. I'm the proud owner of two Dodge TDs, a 94 model and a 99 model and I have been using Fram in both of them. Would I be better off going to the dealer and buying the MoPar brand?

Thanks,
Wendell

Johnwen1 welcome to the board and no do not go the dealer except for a last resort as they charge and arm and a leg for filters. I would first see if there is a Cummins distrubutor near you to get Fleetgaurd Filters and if not order through Geno's Garage.

Bmurphy is right on this one. There is a significant change in the casing and filter for the newer trucks. The older filters are subject to come apart inside or rupture the case. Some of these aftermarket filters may fit but they are not made for this application.

I have heard of 2 others having fram filters coming apart. Then the pieces will flow through the engine, and plug these little orfaces that spray oil onto the cylender boars (for lubrication) and bottom of the piston crowns (for cooling).

I am really suprised that Cummins/Dodge will warrantee an engine when a aftermarket filter fails, causing the damage! If it had a BOMB on it, they would have denied warrantee on the spot!

You know, that milage is a funny thing. I have kept a log of every drop of fuel that has gone through my 2001 and the Very first tank I got 18. 7mpg. That is back and forth to work. Most I have ever got was 24mpg but that was on a 75 mile trip at 55 mph on level ground with about 15 miles of const. going on at 45mph in that zone. On two trips to Florida at 80 mph it gives 18. 5-20. 0 mpg depending on what part of the trip as I live in the mountains of West Virginia. I now have right around 24500 on this truck and the milage just hasn't changed much. Thank goodness, I love this truck! 3. 54's 5spd Quad cab short bed. Sorry for being so long winded. Phil...

Thanks for the advice on the oil filters Douglas. There was not a Cummins distributor in my area so I just ordered a half dozen of the one you recommended from Geno's Garage. I'll feel alot better when they get here and installed on my Dodge. hanks again.
