I have a '96 Dodge and the transfer case is making a funny noise when I put it in four wheel drive and let off the throttle. Somewhat like a squeaking noise. Has anybody had a transfer case taken apart and if so, is it difficult to fix or rebuild?

It might be front axle drive shaft u-joints. Drive train noise can/does travel so make sure you find the location before tear down:)

^ I agree with NIsaacs.

Just went through mine, because the planetary gear was shot.

My thoughts are unless you have the tools already, do not tear it apart. Need a heavy duty lock ring plier or those lock rings will be a pain. My biggest hurdle was the front shaft output needle bearing. Sunk into the case, no easy way to get out. Thought I was going to crack the case.

After adding up parts and tool cost, me rebuilding my own or buying the rebuilt was the same amount, without shipping or core.

thanks for the response i did check the front u-joints they are ok i was just wondering what was involved in taking transfer case apart and rebuild it
