Same steering problems. As for the transmission, if theres over 100k on it, and it doesnt look like its been removed, I would suspect problems in the future, depending on how your friend drives, and if he plans to bomb it. You can check to see if the pump has been touched easily, by the flat-head screws holding the AFC housing down. (look rearward past the injector lines, on the top of the pump, to the rear of it). There will be 3 flat head screws and one break off screw that looks funny. If the bluke (blue-black) paint has been cracked from the screws, someone has been in there.
As for the KDP, same as above with the paint. If you can see broken paint on the timing case housing bolts, someone has been in there for something. Other possibility is the KDP jig, and there would be a phillips screw on the inner middle of the case, just slightly above the fan mount. The screw head would be facing out towards the passenger side, on a 45 degree angle. The PO may have wrote a message on the top of the case also.
The other thing I can tell ya to check for would be ball joints. If the truck has over 100k, they probably need changed. A 2x4 might not though. A good inspection of the brake rotors would be a good thing too, they possibly have never been off (like mine were, they were a bear to replace, but with a porto-power was easier)
Good luck
