I'm looking at ordering either a 2500 or a 3500 SRW HO 6-speed 4x4. I know the 3500 has a slightly higher towing capacity, but what is it that is different between the two that makes one a 3/4 ton and the other a 1 ton?

I am sure there a a few things... but reading on here... and seeing at a dealer the main difference is the overload springs on the rear leaf packs.

Towing, GVWR and GCWR are all but identical.

Just the rear springs I think. The axles are the same with the HO, as is the towing capacity. I think the GVW is 9200 for the 2500 and 9900 for the 3500. Don't assume that the 3500 rides rougher either. Mine squats pretty good with a gooseneck on. I don't think you hit the stiffer part until you are on the overloads.

The only difference between the 3500 and the 2500 SRW is the overload springs in the back. The axles are the same, brakes are the same, frame is the same. Also the 3500 come with cab lights. The GVW for the 2500 is 9000 and the 3500 SRW is 9900lbs. The 3500 will not ride any different the the 2500. Still dealing close to invoice. Greg

See my sig and readers rigs for my truck. When I first got it I was looking for a 2500 until someone here mentioned the springs were the same, so I took test drives in identical trucks, one a 2500 the other a 3500. I took them down the same road and couldn't tell a difference in them unloaded. So, I bought the 3500 to get the higher capacity at no cost in ride. and small $. I hauled a load of logs in mine from CT to VA, weighed on certified scales at 4000#. Engine didn't know it had anything on it. Brakes a little. I avg. a calculated 19. 6 mpg with it back there. It was sitting on the overloads and didn't squat much at all, and rode level with no control problems at an avg speed of 70-75. Rode like your grandaddys caddy, too. Nice and smooth. I would recommend the 3500. Nice to know you have the capacity if you need it. If you don't, it isn't costing you anything to haul it around. Good luck with your decision.

Either way... get what you need and/or want. If you feel that 900 lbs is important then get it. The dually is more of a difference maker in my opinion when it comes down to a significant weight hauling/towing difference... . but again that's my opinion.

Its better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it... . Iwent 3500 and have NO regrets... . except maybe not getting Dually, and that is rare, just because. . DUALLYs LOOK COOL

Thanks for the responses. I'll have to look at the difference in price and see whether the extra capability is worth the difference.

Was there much of a difference in tax or registration between 3/4 and 1 tonnes from state to state. I'll be registering mine in New Mexico.

Honestly, I went for the dually.

As for NM, I live in Albuquerque and I don't think my registration was much, if any, higher. When I lived in CO, it was based on cost, but here I think they do it on vehicle weight. The dually is only a few hundred pounds heavier than the SRW.

If the boys can have training wheels on their bikes, I can have some on my truck, too.....

registeration

Just registered mine in Dec here in Texas and it was $90. 00 bucks and some change. I believe they go by weight here. :D

Be careful about having dealerships doing paperwork on weight. Had my first two trucks have registration wrong. The 92 should have registered at 8510 they did weight as 5400(title listed empty) plus 1500 so registered for 6900. Then my 96 they took 5800 and added 1500 for 7300 registered weight not really a problem until the inspection people said it needed emissions test since it was lightweight( under 8501# vehicle) truck and it was required. Had to go back and get both of them corrected to proper weights 8510 and 8800 to solve that. Other problem could have been overweight tickets ( thankfully never recieved any) because as we all know the shipping weight is WAY off; my legal carrying weight was like 500# with the paperwork they filed and it saved them like 50 on each vehicle.

The new truck I made sure they did it right.

There were two different taxes in Texas on trucks one was personal property so value based other is reguistration tax which is GVW based. I believe the personal property on Texas truck has been recinded; I have not seen a tax valuation report this year for my trucks and normally I would have by now.

I just checked my renewal notice and sure enough, it is registered at

empty - 6900

gross weight - 8900

I guess i'll try to get this fixed when I take this in. Also noticed that the dealer registered it in the wrong county.

What everyone else said, also When I bought mine, they said that the rear brakes had some heavier duty parts, and that some 2500's had the smaller differential(10. 5") vs. the larger(11. 5") on all 3500's. Go to this link under FAQ and scan down to differences between the 2500 and 3500. https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=64032

I think that is right elite. I will be getting my new "600" this coming week, I think, and it is a SRW 3500. I was also told that there were more differences than just springs. Something to do with the rear differential but don't remember exactly what it was.
