i have shifted on the fly many times at the dragstrip , within the first 60 to 100 ft upon launch , lots of boost , have had my best 60 ft times like this , no noises , but i don't recommend it #ad
oops this is 4H to 2H ...

EDIT ... oops i just realized this is 2H to 4H , as i have been able to do many times , except the other day when it didn't go in all the way and when i pulled it in ,it did grind some , i have changed the oil , i think that doing it on the fly means while moving , but let up on the throttle while doing it.

I checked mine tonight on the way to work, it will grind when I let off of accell. , but if I stay in accell. it slides in nice. I was @ 50 mpg. Scott

I've used mine alot lately. I only had it grind twice on me. Once was the first time I tried to shift it into 4H when it was new. The second time was today when I didn't shift it decisively enough. Other than that, it has shifted fine for me. Under power, deceleration, clutch in or out it has shifted just fine for me.
My opinion for the grinding issue, be agressive with that lever! You want 4H, then be sure of it. If you try to do it slow it will grind.

I was playing around with my 4wd tonight, and I checked the manual again. It says that it may help to let up on the accelerator when shifting into 4H. I tried it a couple of different ways - no problems at all. It seems to be getting easier the more I shift it. It only has 6800 miles, and I've probably only had it in 4wd 4 or 5 times so far.
The manual also said to be going 2-3mph and to shift the transmission into N (for autos) or have the clutch in when shifting into 4L.

To everyone having a grinding problem when engaging the transfercase let me share my story with you. I have a '95 5 speed with the standard duty transfer case. Since the truck was new I always had difficukties engaging the transfer case. The lever was always hard to pull back and it would grind. I thought the linkage was binding. Dealer said "no problems found". Told me I was not engaging it properly. later I went back with the same complaints. I was now told it was the nature of the beast because it was so "heavy duty". Second winter comes along, same problems. Go to different dealer. Tell them it is hard to pull the lever back and a lot of time it grinds and takes multiple attempt to get into 4 high. Once again I was told "it's normal", "no problems found". I was told to make sure I was pulling the lever straight back (duh), let up on gas pedal and to push the clutch in and let the truck coast for awhile to make sure all drive-line parts moving at same speed and then engage transfer case. This did not work. It got to a point that it was so hard to engage I almost went off the road a few times while dicking around with pulling on the shift lever. Third winter comes, back to a different dealer with same complaints and my concern about linkage binding. Same song and dance, "its normal", "No problems found", etc. Forth winter warranty expires, guess what? Yep the transfer case dies. When in 4 high the transfer case would start to grind like hell whenever accelerating, would stop when let up on gas. Was about 10,000 miles past warranty. Went to dealer thinking I had a valid case for repairs even though out of warranty. What a joke. Got DC headquarters involved, said I multiple service papers documenting my problems since truck new. Dealer and DC said we know, it's all in the computer and according to what we are reading from all your complaints a problem was never found, everything was normal as determined by many different dealers. As far as DC was concerned I never had a thing wrong with my transfer case, I was the one with the problem. DC said they could have a Dodge dealer only tear down the transfer case and IF the current problem was related to my prior complaints they would CONSIDER paying for repairs. DC was very wishy-washy or the issure if they would pay for anything. I ended getting discusted and went to a repair shop. Found the problem was a washer on the rear of one of the shafts broke and allowed the gears on that shaft to slide back when under acceleration which would cause some of the gears to come out of alignment and grind. Repair guy said looked like there was a problem with this from the start and that all my problems could have been related. Hard to say, but repair shop said if the transfer case was working proper I never should of had the problems I did since truck was new.

I hope this helps some of you. Dont settle for "it's normal", "NO problems found". I found that with this kind of documentation you have no leg to stand on if you try to take matters up with DC after warranty.

Yes groundpounder it should be listed on the window sticker as a Heavy Duty 241 transfer case as an option or if you have the snow plow package it is included in it.

I also had the same grinding while shifting my '85 4x4 gasser into 4 lo or 4 lo into 4 hi that I have on my Y2K Auto Diesel.
To tell you the truth, that's why I bought the RAM 4x4 again... because those push button type easy-shift wimpy girlee 4x4 trucks are not trucks!! They are cars with 4x4.

While my wife was behind the wheel during her stint of the test drive, she wanted to know if you could shift from 2h to 4h on the fly. Our salesman Odell said to pull the shifter, which she did meekly, and it ground the gears. To which Odell replied "Grab it like it's money Miss Toni". No grinding after that.

Although some of you may actually have problems, I tend to agree with the aggressive pull theory. Every manual shift 4X4 transfer case rig I have ever driven has been about the same. Get a firm grip on the lever, back out of the throttle and yank back firmly. Moving always seems to work better than stopped. In and out of 4 low is usually tougher, and of course you must be stopped (or very nearly so). I have only had my Ram in 4HI a few times so far, and have never had it in 4LO yet. Anyway my 4HI seems to shift OK with the above technique.

I want to correct my above statement about steady throttle. After playing last night with mine, I found taht it shifted much easier with light or no throttle. Sorry for any mis-information.

By the way, I shifted a 1/2 dozen times, no grind. Jerk it like you got a set.

Well, I dont have a problem on my 96. Its got the LD T-case. I shift from 2 to 4 alot when playin in the mud and snow. I try not to turn sharp with my foot in it in 4x4 due to the front U-joints. I recon I shift in and out 15-20 times on a normal in the mud. The only time it grinds is when I take my time on shifting, or dont completly shift. It shifts a little harder when moving, but not much. Must have got it broke in. I will sometimes grind a little on the shift to 4 lo, but most t-cases do that.

Took the truck to a dealer today. The mechanic, a 6'6" 300 pound weakling could not shift the unit. The transfer case will come out for repairs after the holidays. The tech said this condition absolutely is not normal. I knew I was shifting hard and firm, or trying to. For those having the same problem I’ll post the results of their find after the New Years.

More fuel to the fire!

My 2000 auto also does some grinding on occasion when switching into 4H. Typically, though - I just take my foot off the gas and give a firm pull on the lever, and voila - 2H to 4H without stopping. If it DOES grind, and I really need 4H at the time, I come to a stop and shift - then take off.

My 2001 auto HD t-case shifts just fine, just pull hard. Have been in 4x4 for the week or so.

It seems to be getting better when I shift into 4H. I had the grinding problem but am using 4 wheel a bit more now that snow is on the ground here. I have only put it into 4H maybe two or three times since I bought it in April of this year. Maybe that's the problem. I need to shift into 4 wheel more often. I like the shift-on-the-fly because it is much more convenient for me not having to stop and do it.

Well, I'm in trouble now. The little lady was driving the truck this morning in a couple of inches of fresh snow. She got stuck at the top of our driveway while waiting for a car to pass. Needless to say she didn't have it in 4wd and she couldn't get it to go into 4H. She ended up sliding backwards into the drainage ditch that runs along the driveway. The neighbor had to help her get it in 4H. No problem pulling itself out of the hole. Already got a nasty email and she was a half-hour late for work. She is going to kill me when I get home. #ad

How many times do you have to tell them to put it in 4wd BEFORE you get into trouble? #ad

I had some gear clash on tne 2001 ETH took it to the dealer and they told me to pull the leaver hard and fast. It seems to work a lot better now. My 1995 did not have the same difficulty shifting into 4x4.
