I had some gear clash on tne 2001 ETH took it to the dealer and they told me to pull the leaver hard and fast. It seems to work a lot better now. My 1995 did not have the same difficulty shifting into 4x4.

Mine has an automatic and I havent had any problems shifting from 2H to 4H or back to 2H,even at highway speeds. The only thing thats a pain is the delay of engagement when you need it. One thing I have always done,if I feel any pressure when pulling the shifter or pushing it back, lightly accelerate,or decelerate so the bind in the transfer case is lessened and the tcase shifter moves easily. I have used this same shifting procedure with an automatic or stick over the years.

I also haven't had any shifting problems when going from 2h to 4h when going down the road,or for that matter going from 4h to 2h, the transfer case goes in and out effortlessly,I also have a 6-speed in my truck,I don't know if the automatics have a different procedure

ZMAN - Stopped for a car to go by? Tell her those are just speed bumps, keep going. #ad

'Tis safe to say that the grinding is from the two propeller shafts not turning at the same speed, most likely because the front shaft isn't turning.

I've always shifted 2H-4H and 4H-2H at any speed and any gear. But I always ease up on the throttle to 'neutral power', shift, wait a bit, then ease up and bear down on the go pedal. This allows the front slip shaft to fully engage. I've rarely had any grinding when shifting 2H-4H.

When shifting, you want to grasp the knob and shift quickly and firmly. Mighty nanosecond yanks are probably not recommended, as are lazy, weak shifts.

What surprised me was the manual telling me to shift from high-low or low-high while moving at up to 20 MPH. Shift transmission to neutral, grasp the t-case knob and shift firmly and steadily, not too quickly, but not slowly, either.
