I tried to post this earlier but changed my email address and it messed up my password for a while.
This is my understanding. The 3. 55 rearend exists but only available on the 1500's. For the 2500 and 3500, they get the 3. 54 which is heavier duty due to the power available (Cummins) and the extra weight of the larger trucks (2500's and 3500's). They're basically same gear ratio for similarity between drivetrain dynamics for 1500's vs 2500's & 3500's (engr decision)
As for not being able to select the 3. 54 LS, I heard you couldn't get the LS with the 3. 54 any longer, the only way you could get the LS was to go with the 4. 10's. That's what I heard anyway. If that's true, I'm glad I was one of the last ones to get the 3. 54 LS!

Y2K 2500 Cummins ETC/DEE, SLT+, 4X4, Quad, LB, Intense Blue Sport, 3. 54 anti-spin, rear aux. springs (camper special), sliding rear window, all options except cab clearance lights including agate leather, totally stock, some ring fell off, whistles louder since & D/C must have screwed up on the wiring cause the fogs stay on with high beam. Since everybody else listed their toys, I will too.
