Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) ***3 Rebuilt Transmissions..Need Help***

Hey all,

A buddy of mine has a 1998. 05 CTD with the auto transmission. It's a 4x4 longbed. He doesn't have any modifications other than the truck is piped. He told me that he has had his transmission rebuilt 3 times and is only getting about 12 mile per gallon. The dealership told him that his transmission is not building enough line pressure, so they had to turn down his fuel. He wants to chip this truck and put some upgrades on it but is afraid due to the transmission problems. Any suggestions or advice?

For the money that he spent on getting his transmission rebuilt three times he could have went with any of the big name companies. My advice is if it happens again or if he doesnt want to deal with the possibility of it going out again he should definately upgrade. You could do a search on here and find tons of information. Just my two cents, Andrew

yes what's been said... better to take it to one the companies that specialize in diesel trannies. Only than can you feel like it's safe to add power. I know it stinks but that's the best option. They are wanting to turn down the fuel because they can't build a transmission to hold the torque etc. Have him get in touch with one of the major companies on this site and he will be all

Thanks for the advice guys, I also told him that he should go with a "big name" transmission and alleviate this whole problem. But, I rode in this truck and they have the fuel turned down so low that the truck isn't even running up to stock expectations. The transmission has to be capable of dealing with the stock torgue and hp ratings, right? Just wanted to know if anyone has dealt with this problem, and if so, if there were any quick fixes?

yes, he shouldn't have to suffer the power loss on his truck b/c the transmission shop doesn't have a clue. Have him check for codes and report back. He can check it by cycling the key three times and leaving it on on the third (don't crank it). It should show codes on the odometer. Wait for the message p-done to flash( it will flash at the end of each read). Once you see p-done the second time it should return to the odometer and its done. 12mpg sounds too low.

If it's a 98. 5 how exactly did they turn down the fuel??? It's a 24v right?

Not sure. He approached me by seeing my truck and asked me if i knew what was wrong with his. He said that they "turned his fuel down". Not sure how, but that is what he said. Maybe that is just what the mechanics said to make him happy, I'm not sure. I will ask him and let you all know tomorrow exactly what they did.

If It's a 98. 5 you can't flash the key to get the codes. He needs to either find someone with a Smarty, or go to a chain autoparts store to get the codes read.

ooops sorry for the lack of knowledge I assumed the second gens where all the same. Maybe we should all "turn down our fuel" to save the enviroment:-laf

Hmmmm I had to rebuild my namebrand transmission, so you have to rebuild then also. It only made it 320,000 miles before died :{ .
