I agree you would likely not have liked a 48RE in your 2003, but that's not a good comparison to a Aisin or 68RFE. I wouldn't enjoy a 48RE, but really liked my '18 Aisin and so far the '22 is doing great and I should be towing soon.

Personally I would look for a HO and give it time, if you don't like it after a while then consider a swap but it will take custom tuning and not be cheap.

I totally agree and I would indeed buy a new one BUT I can't keep myself from saying if I buy a 2500 with the auto and the past issues I will be replacing it at a 100,000 and I can't eat that when it would cost me about the same to swap it to a manual IF I were to stick to the 2018 year which I am fine with. At my age I'll be damn lucky to live longer than another 20 years. LOL Looking on the bright side of it.
Fortunately for myself I have access to some incredible guys that would help me with doing the custom things and for myself it would be piece of mind that if I needed to work on it I could.

Will I have an early 2008, 3/4T Mega Cab, 4X4 with the 68RFE and have been running 60HP/120TQ over stock at the rear axle, since 2009. I now have 145,000 on the OD and for most of that I have towed a 34RL Cedar Creek 5th wheel trailer. I am close to 20,000 LBS when I am towing.

The only thing I have done to this transmission is I added a Mag-Hytec deep transmission pan and a temp gauge, in 2009. I do change the fluids and filters between 40,000 and 45,000 miles. The truck still runs flawless, and I would not hesitate to buy another truck with the 68RFE or an Aisin for a transmission.

Just my $0.02.

I was paying close attention to how mine was shifting yesterday. I can’t find or feel any issues with how my 2022 ho shifts . I still have the camper on now. Soon will be empty. As someone has said I seem to think the transmission picks up your driving style. I ran mine pretty hard during break in lots of tow haul engine breaking. I pushed on it a little. Some folks probably don’t drive very hard and it screws it up. So far no issues with truck.
