I am contemplating swapping my older drivetrain with a "newer" used (I mean engine+transmission+transfercase).

Does anybody know if the 3rd gen 2004. 5/2006 drivetrain will work under my truck ?

I think there should be no problem with hardware, the electronics are what worries me.

Anybody's done this ?

do able, yes, if you have $$$ and time to burn. Personally, I think I would buy a new one for how much its going to cost you to get it too all work. Granted, if you have the tools, time, and the knowlegde of the wiring of these trucks, you could probably do it. But still, considering you are going to dump near 5-10k just on a engine, transmission, and t-case from a 3rd gen, I am thinking an entire 3rd gen would be a better bet. But thats just me.

Any reason why for the swap?

I am getting everything from a wrecked truck, I am not going to buy each individual part.

I don't think it will be very expensive, engine and transmission will fit with no problem, as I said it's electrical hookup that concerns me, att the ECMs are included

ah, ok, well if you can get everthing from the donor for a reasonable price, might as well go for it if you dont mind playing with the wiring. FSM might help you out alot! Might want to make friends with someone at the dealer too! :D

Do you get the axles with the donor too?

I might keep the also, I would like to get a 3:73 ratio, otherwise I have a friend that might want to change it's 4:10 to a 3:55

If I can get a straight frame it might be faster to swap bodies... ... we'll see if I get a good deal. Oo.

BTW Alphacowboy I am just 15 miles south of you..... :D

well, hot damn, didnt see that, if you ever need help, let me know! My dad lives just off 5 north of 19, so i am out that way quite often! Where did ya pick up the truck from?

Send me an email at -- email address removed --, and I'll let you know... .

Since you have the complete donor truck it isn't too bad (as long as you have a lot of time on your hands).

The CR motor is easier to get running right than a 24V VP44 motor is.

Everything is contained with the motor (computer, wiring, etc. )

Getting the dash to work correctly will take a little trick wiring, but nothing too crazy.

Have fun with it. Also if you run into to many questions then start a thread in the conversion forum. That group has a lot of valuble info. You just have to ask.

Later,

Wes
