Has anyone tried to put the new towing mirrors, the ones that are power and heated, on a 2nd generation pickup? I have power and heated mirrors now, but would like the new ones. I am curious about mounting and wiring issues.

Hey... I am glad that someone out there has the same idea. I have the towing mirrors now but they are the un-powered ones... . I asked the dealer the other day about it and he said probably not. . since the body designs are different But he said that he would look in on it and let me know. I am really hoping that it is possible... I love the towing mirrors, and to be able to get them with heat and power, that would be even better.

it can b done... for a price... . need to sets of tow mirrors... 94-02/unpowered... . 03 tow mirrors/power heated. u need the respective bases of each and do a swap.

Thanks, I've asked a couple of places they all said no way.

I've already got the flip out tow mirrors, only takes about half an hour to adjust the passenger sid mirror.

Credit for the mirror conversion goes to Rob Thomas. I have not done the mod to my truck, but would like to. I asked Rob if I could put the instructions on my web page to make them available to the members here, ahd he agreed. Thanks Rob.

I have the unpowered manual non heated flip out tow mirrors.

Sounds like, check to see if you have the wiring harness in the door, buy a set of the 2003 electrical, heated tow mirrors, do whatever you are going to do about the switch, make the change over.

Have I got the basucs right?

Hey,

I'm an engineer for Magna Mirrors, and we make those towing mirrors. I'm on the GM side of things so I don't have a lot of knowledge about that program.

They were available for the 02 2500 pickups as well. So there should not be any issues with making them work.

No conversion needed. Just unbolt your old ones, and plug in the new ones. Took me about 1/2 hour to do both.

I have a set on mine, but they were free :D

I think the powered tow mirrors were only available in '02 on the 1500 3rd gen pickups. You still need to do the conversion for a second gen truck to have the heat and power adjustments.

If the manufacturer would build heated/power replacement mirrors for the towing mirrors, they would sell like crazy. I don't even care about the heat, and I could get by with just power on the right side.

curatchko: If you have any connections to the department that make the mirrors for Dodge, maybe the TDR could put together an order to show the need.

I'm wondering if while the old mirrors were in production for Dodge, if there may have been contractural problems with doing this. Now that those mirrors are not used by Dodge anymore, maybe it's possible for them to build them now.

From reading your message, I understand you work for the company that produces the mirrors. I am in a bit of a quandry right now. I purchased a set of mirrors from my local Dodge dealership (the '03 heat/pwr towing) for a very reasonable price. They are selling them in sets for about the same price you can purchase individual tow mirrors for '02's for. Anyways - after re-reading the instructions that were posted and getting the mirrors in my possession, it is very apparent that one needs the tow mirror base in order to do the conversion. My Dodge dealership does NOT show that base as an individual item. Would it be possible to purcahse that mounting base from your company directly? The issue is that the mounting trim by the window is much larger on an '03 pickup. My pickup has the stock mirrors on it and that base will not house the flip-up tow mirros.

Okay,

I spoke with the release engineer for that program... remember, I'm not in the chrysler group so this is all new to me, all I did was give them my year truck and they made me a set, electric, and heated, but they were made in the lab here... . go figure. I had no idea they weren't production until just now.

Anyhow, these tow mirrors have been available since 2000 for our trucks. But only in the manual mode, non electric, non heat. Guess everyone already knows that.

The only electric/heated versions are for the New body style... guess everyone knows that too. So yes, if you want electric and heat you need to cross breed the base and from what the engineer told me it's quite a complicated deal if you want it done correctly.

You need the base from the non-electric tow mirrors and then you need to disassemble and cross breed the two of them. Unfortunatley you need to purchase the entire non-electric tow mirror assemblies and I've heard of them going for upwards of 1000 bucks at dealers around here.

As for selling partial assemblies or parts on some type of group purchase straight from Magna, that legally cannot happen.

These parts have Chrysler part numbers on them, and are owned by Chrysler, not Magna. We produce and supply them, but with the Chrysler part numbers they are Chryslers property and we have no rights to do anything with them, without the permission from Chrysler and that's a fat chance in red tape if you know what I mean.

Sooo... . sorry I couldn't be of any help.

I can appreciate that you can't sell finished goods as they carry DCX part numbers. I also know that Magna is a very large company, so I would expect the red tape to be pretty thick there.

Retrofitting the existing non-powered trailer tow mirror shouldn't be to difficult. This of course is assuming that the non-powered cases have the necessary stand-offs, etc... or that the harness will fit through the earlier model pivot, sail, etc... (sorry, I'm not an engineer) All of which is bold assumption being that the pre '03 model did not have the power option.

I wouldn't think that the motor-mech and wire harness would be propriatary to DCX. Is there any chance of getting a hold of sub-components or even sub-assemblies?

I went to the Power Vision website and the heated/electric mirrors they had were just a simple replacement. Has anyone had any experience with them? They're not cheap but they look like they work.

I think that RustyJC has them and speaks highly of them. You might try to PM him, or maybe he'll chime in here soon.
