hey i have a buddy with a '04 1/2 cummins and he bought twins to put on there and i was needin to know if there is anyway to make his turbo fit on my '91? cuz i need somethin bigger than stock bad cuz i can make 36lb of boost with it and egt maxed :{ i know the housing will need to be changed cuz it will be way to small for as much fuel as im pushin... if it wont work on there can i use the compresser wheel and housing on the turbo i have?

from what I understand, the HY35 is a serious downgrade for your fuel level. It is barely adequate at the levels in the 04, to say nothing of a 1stGen making mid 30s boost. A good used HX35 with a 16cm housing may be your best bet, or an HTT upgrade of your choice.

thats a good point i have heard not to use that turbo... i didnt know thats what the '04 has... i dont know much bout the CR motor just the 12v and some bout the 24v... yeah i thought bout goin with the stage 4 from htt and just gettin the big 60mm wheel and back plate like the hx40 has.

A friend of mine has a 93 and has a turbo that he says came off a 03. It doesn't look like anything I've ever seen. Although I've never been under the hood of a 03-07. Either way, it was PATHETIC!!! Tiny! The compressor housing looked like it belongs on a yard tractor and it had the quite restrictive 9cm housing:eek:. I thought that the 03 and up engines had the compressor housing with the molded 90* turn. This did not. It bolted to the stock cast elbow from compressor housing to intercooler pipe. I would not use one on a stock truck.

The 04. 5 turbo should be an H351E. It has a 10 cm3 hot side and 60 or 61 mm compressor. They will push pretty decent air up to 40 psi. Stock the CR's of that vintage make 325 HP and it will keep the EGT's around 1200 under a hard extended pull. They are good close to 400 HP if you don't overspeed them.

Definitely an upgrade over that poor H1C/21 and the pressure your abusing it with. :-laf I have a 60 mm wheel on a 16 housing and it is way too hot on the top end. I am looking at an SPS62/12 as an upgrade in the near future.

Its not all about housing size on a turbo. You have a waste gate to dump excess when the boost builds. The smaller hot side allows a bigger compressor and better air at higher numbers. Short of a VGT they are a pretty good trade off for spool and making decent air at 35 to 40 psi.

FYI, the 03's had the nasty nine housings and a smaller compressor. The 600 series engines got the upgraded version to help with the extra fuel. If its free/cheap it might make you a good upgrade. :)

Free and cheap is always good. I guess you could always try it out and just make sure you keep the wastegate hooked up. On that 03 turbo, you definately wouldn't be able to swap in a hx35 or h1c exhaust housing. Instead of the center section of the turbo being clamped/bolted to the exhaust housing, it had what looked to be a v-band clamp:eek:. 04. 5? Probly not interchangeable, as far as exhaust housings eh?

Housings, I doubt, are interchangeable. I don't think you would want to use a big housing on one of these newer turbos unless there were other changes made. Spinning that big compressor in its map takes a bit of design work on the hot side. :)

However, the complete unit should bolt to the manifold (I think). You will need a 4" DP though.

thanks for the reply guys i will just have to look at it and see... i can probly get it cheap from him after i help him put the twins on his pickup... he thinks he needs twins for the 100 horse injectors and a edge box and thinks the turbos will add alot more hp:rolleyes:

He needs something for the 100HP injectors and a Edge box, not sure about twins.

I didnt know the HY35s were so rugged on the newer ones. I had just read Joe Donnelley's articles about the 3rd Gens, and was going off that.

Ok, a little background on this turbo designation. HY35 is really not the correct designation for the 3rd gen turbos. The HY35 is what is on the 2000-2002 trucks, as a common reference.

The 03 to early 04's had the designation HE341 and sometimes letters after it for application. They were really the same thing as an HY35 with mods done to compressor maps and turbine. Those are the ones that have very small turbines and only a 56 mm compressor wheel. They really don't like high boost and high exhaust flow conditions.

Starting in 04. 5 the designation is HE351CW and those have a larger hot side housing, extended map compressor with a 62 mm wheel, larger waste gate, etc. The HE351 seems to be a pretty good turbo upto 40psi where the HE341 was just not made to go that high and it tended to get toasty when you spun it hard.

The HE351 is pretty impressive with what it can do with some extended boost. I added a Qzilla boost controller to get it to pull up to 40 psi and see what it would do under a load. Pulling 10k+ on 6% grade, 70mph at 2900 rpm's, 40 psi of boost with 60+ psi of drive pressure, and it was holding at cool 1200-1250 degreees on the EGT gauge. Normally that woud be bumping 1400.

My 92 would be pegging an 1800 gauge doing that. :{ It needs more air and an HE351 might just be the ticket. :D
