OK, AlphaRex flog/driving lights arrived Thursday and I managed to install them late on Saturday evening. Managed to squeeze under the front of the truck without having to jack it up (2x4 and they are much lower than 4x4) and I had enough room to get the light out and new one in past the PacBrake air tank that is mounted somewhat below and slightly inboard of the left light. Right side was wide open (I installed the Hella lights using a Mopar kit)
As the new lights had wire connections on short pigtails (as opposed to the hard connections on the Hella lights) I had to use wire ties to keep wire connectors secure so they don't dangle and bounce around.
The lights work quite well. The white beam is taller than the yellow beam and shines a little higher. The yellow fog light beam is quite low and both have a sharp cutoff and a lot of spread. I have not driven them yet but the adjustment doesn't look too bad, as they came out of the box.
The hardware, screws and clipnuts are all in a bag in the left light's box and sure enough, I started on the right light (easier to install without the air tank in the way) and I'm thinking, "what, no hardware?" then I opened the Left side box and it was all there.
The lights stay on whatever you set them for (white or yellow) if you are, for instance, on low beam and just use the momentary position of the headlight switch to flash someone. If you click fully to high beam, they of course go out, but will come back on AS WHITE DRIVING LIGHTS when you switch back, if you were on high beam more than 5 secs. If you are using fog lights, there would be no reason to switch to high beam anyhow. If you are fully clicked to high beam and switch back to low, its just like you were switching the driving/fog lights on off quickly, it comes back on in the opposite of whatever you had it on before.
The difference is that the momentary position leaves the low beam on, and ADDS the high beam (which is a lot of amps with normal headlights, that the system cannot tolerate for more than a couple of seconds). The AlphaRex headlights react differently, maintaining the low beam (3 projectors) and on high beam, simply adding the fourth projector. Thats handled with circuitry inside the headlight.
None of this bothers me, as I rarely use them, but may find good use for them in extremely foggy conditions such as found in Florida.
As I have said on the thread I made about installing the AlphaRex NOVA headlights (
https://www.turbodieselregister.com/threads/alpharex-nova-headlights.274662/), I REALLY LIKE the AlphaRex Nova headlights, but am pissed that the amber side reflectors don't reflect, and more perturbed with the hokey answer I got from them, BUT I AM NOT ABOUT TO SEND THE LIGHTS BACK BECAUSE OF THAT.
