I've got a 2nd Gen 24 valve and looked at an '03 w/4. 10s in it. My current truck has 3. 54s. Anyone got 4. 10s that is willing to give me an honest answer on mileage? The on board computer on the truck said it averaged 18. 8 MPG... ..... a little tough for me to believe. It's a screamin' deal on the truck..... but since fuel is so freakin' high now, I am a little concerned about mileage.

well i think you better sit down and have a smoke. I get in the city stop and go and turnoff and on 12- 12. 5mpg. highway at 55-60 15-16mpg(all from the overhead computer). 12k miles on the truck

I got about 19 MPG commuting with my 2001. 5 6 speed with 4. 10's. I get about the same thing with my current truck.

I have hand calculated every tank since trunk was purchased last year. Trunk has just over 13,000 miles, I tow a 10,000 lb 5th wheel about 10% of the time. Best Mpg = 16. 65 Worst MPG = 13. 05 I had the flash done after the 6th tank, not much of a difference. The average total for the entire year was 14. 72, these are actual figures, I find it hard to believe some of the numbers I have seen in the past on here.

I bought my truck this Jan. and since I found it on the internet i had an 8 hr trip to go pick it up. Went to pick it up with dad's 00 with 3. 55's and my truck has 4. 10's - on the way home side by side driving dad's truck got 17. 6 and my truck got 18. 2 and I have 4. 10's - explain that one! I still haven't figured that one out

I have a 2002 with 4. 10s and 6speed. I always seem to get 16mpg whether I am in stop and go city traffic or cruising down the interstate at 70. Loaded down I get 8-10 which is awesome.

Better aerodynamics with the 3rd gen. How's that for an explanation? ;)

Anyway, From reading on this board I would never EVER believe the overhead computer readings. All I can tell you is that I get about 16. 5 in the city now with 24K miles and about 20 on the highway going 65mph. When new I got about 14 in the city and 18. 5-19 on the highway. I do have a TST PMCR but I rarely turn it up past 1/1 and I think that helps my mileage a lot. Towing I get 9. 5-11 depending on the terrian but I don't tow heavy very often. About 7-9K lbs at most.

I know it's not the same yr model, but when I swapped from 4. 10's to 3. 54's I picked up a full 1. 5 mpg on my ~700 mile weekly commute.

BTW, the puller guys are looking for 4. 10 Dana 80's. I bought a used low mileage 3. 54 limited slip rear axle complete & sold mine on ebay for within $30 of what I paid for the other one delivered.

I wouldn't pass up a nice truck just because of the gears... ...

The overhead on my 02 reads 20-22, hand calculating is 15-16 with 4. 10's when the truck is empty. When loaded I am getting 10-12. With the bigger tires I am running about 2100 rpm's at 70mph. I like the 4. 10's for the farm use and running the snow plow. Get the truck, fuel prices can't stay this high forever, can they

I have 4. 10s in my '97. Bone stock I couldn't get over 16 @70mph (summer). 14-15 winter. BOMBed and before the flatbed, I was getting 17. 5 @70mph (summer). With the flatbed, 15. 5 @ 70 in the summer and 12-13 in the winter.

Our 03, 4. 10's, 48RE, SRW 4x4 etal with 35K miles -- only using the overhead computer gets 20 to 21 mpg if I stay on the interstate and keep it under 65mph. And that is with the A/C on!! When it was new (less than 15K miles) I was really upset as I was only getting 14-15mpg.

In town only I get 15-17 or less if we sit at the bank, a fast food joint or lots of long lights.

We also pull a big 5'er and get 10 to 12 up hill --- This summer I have left the trailer in the mountains and we visit it!! coming back empty last trip with lots of downhill and 55 to 65 highway speed limits I did get 21 MPG but that is a lot of downhill and some small towns with lights -- plus a very long stop for road construction.

In the winter the fuel mileage drops a couple of MPG to 18-19. More sitting and warm-up time.

Our '99 was similar, but had 3. 54's -- It ran about 18-19 interstate and 13-15 in town. didn't pull with it. A few years ago on a trip from SoCal to Utah I decided to put the tail gate down and kept it under 65 MPH. got to 22 mpg on the computer. Sold it about Jan 2003 with 75K miles.

Good truck but 3rd gen is so much better!!!

I've got about 3100 miles on my '05 and have tracked every gallon. So far I've done mostly secondary highway, typically around 50 MPH and unloaded. The overhead usually reads 22-23, and calculated comes out to 18-19. Note mine's a stick (NV5600HD).

I just got back from 4600 miles from NC to Colorado/New Mexico pulling 36' Cedar Creek. Total trip total was 13. 5

I got 16. 7 mpg hand calculated last week. Just installed the Rokktek sensor this WED hoping to get a little more mpg. I wish I had 3. 73's. this engine just turns to many RPM's. Ive noticed If I run over 2000 rpm's the mpg start dropping quick. Tried running 70-75 mph 2weeks ago and averaged low to mid 14's. that's crappy
