I'm planning on building a 4" exhaust for my 89 cummins. I was thinking of using aluminum, since it is available to me pretty cheap. What do you guys think?

Add a whole degree of difficulty in welding and you'll have to brace the hangers well to prevent it from breaking. There is also the issue of a turbo flange..... get through all that and you should have a sweet little system

I can weld aluminum in my sleep (been doin it for years) and i already have blueprints for the flange. My concern was the breaking issue. Instead of using those crappy tin hangers with a peice of rubber in between, I was going to mount custom hangers solid to the exhaust and put the rubber between the mount and frame (like a body mount) like my 69 pickup has.

If you were to use some sort of strap and wrap it part way around the pipe it should provide the needed strength for the job. We need to remember this will be a very light system so if installed in such a way that it isn't under stress it shouldn't take much to support it.
